Course Duration:
2 year(s), Full TimeThe Bangalore Centre of the Indian Statistical Institute was conceived by Prof.P.C.Mahalanobis during 1960s, even when the city was emerging as a centre of science. It is a tribute to his foresight that the Institute is now well-established in one of the most vibrant scientific communities in Asia.
With the Statistical Quality Control unit functioning in Bangalore from 1956, and Documentation Research and training Centre from 1962, Professor Mahalanobis thought of starting a centre of ISI around the mid-sixties. The presence of several national institutes of higher learning, the salubrious climate and the growing metropolitan culture must have prompted him to consider this possibility. In 1966, Govt. of Karnataka granted ISI 30 acres of forest land full of eucalyptus trees, next to the upcoming Bangalore University on Mysore Road, at a token price.
It has departments that are highly consequential for the surveys and statistics such as Documentation Research, Economic Analysis, Quality control unit, Informatics Unit and Mathematics Unit. Several visionaries such as R. C. Bose, S. N. Roy, K. R. Nair, R. R. Bahadur, Gopinath Kallianpur, Pitamber Pant etc., have emancipated the institute to that of national importance. It shows a roadmap in the form of theoretical development, by methodical scientific and non-scientific studies.

Hi, Janardhan
Other than refundable Library and Hostel deposit and the recurring mess fees there are no fees charged by the institute. A monthly Stipend of INR 3000, is awarded at the time of admission to each student. This is valid initially for the first semester only. A repeating student will not get any stipend or contingency grant or prizes during the repeat year. However, if she/he is from such an economically
underprivileged background that this step will force him/her to discontinue, then she/he can appeal to the Dean of Studies or the Students In-charge, for financial support. The amount of stipend to be awarded in each subsequent semester depends on academic performance, conduct, and attendance, as specified below, provided the requirements for continuation in the academic programme (excluding repetition) are satisfied.
