Bethune College was established in the year 1879 by John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune. It is a Government womens college under the control of Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal. The college was started with one student which has now climbed up to over 1300 women students pursuing higher education in the fields of Arts and Science. It is affiliated to University of Calcutta for the courses at degree level.

The college is recognised by the University Grants Commission with a status of "College with Potential for Excellence". It is supported by the Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan [RUSA] and sponsored by Government under DST-FIST. The college is accredited with 'A' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. The Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India provided financial support to most of the science departments.

The college has strives to achieve engagement of the administration, teachers and students in a highly academically congenial and co-operative environment. The college follows an efficient implementation of the semester-based curriculum across all subjects under the Choice Based Credit System. The ultimate objective of the CBCS is to introduce a wider range of choices to the student that would cater to the taste and aptitude, encourage academic mobility and foster freedom from a rigid System.

Bethune College Admission is provided in all of its 18 departments offering courses in Arts and Science. The courses offers are Undergraduate and Postgraduate level and admissions is on merit basis only. The college is a meeting place for students from the whole of Bengal and other states as well. It is a college with great history and reputation and is also a meeting place for students from all walks of life.

  • Candidate should have passed the Higher Secondary Exam [10+2] in the science stream with the relevant subjects and 60% marks in aggregate from a recognised board.
  • Candidate should have passed the Higher Secondary Exam [10+2] with 60% aggregate score and degree course as a subject.
  • Candidate should have passed B.Sc.(Hons.) 45% marks in Hons. Subject and Physics/Chemistry as a subject of study with the concerned degree subject.
  • Candidate should have passed B.A.(Hons.) 50% marks in Hons. Subject and the concerned degree course should be a subject of study.

The admissions to Bethune College are done Online and on the basis of Merit only. The college admissions are as per the guidelines provided by the Affiliating University and Government of West Bengal.

  • Admission process is conducted online through the college official website and candidates should submit the form online only.
  • A candidate can apply for a maximum of three different Honours subjects but separate application forms must be submitted for each Honours subject.
  • Admission will be made strictly in order of merit.
  • The procedure of admission to the three-year degree course starts after publication of the results of Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary Education.
  • M.A. and M.Sc. admission forms are available online after the publication of the results of Part III (1+1+1) B.A./B.Sc.(Hons.) examination conducted by Calcutta University.

We have students society and various clubs on our campus. Annual fest is celebrated grandly. The college life, in general, was good.
