Master of Arts [MA] (English Literature), batch of 2020
CLUBS & ASSOCIATIONS
8/10

There are various clubs and societies on campus, such as the art society, the quiz and knowledge acquisition society, and sports clubs include the football club, the badminton, and table tennis clubs.
Our main cultural festival is called the Milieu that takes place in the late spring every year. Then there are three freshers' induction events, each conducted by the departments, the Students' Union, and the college. Apart from that, there are some more events and celebrations held throughout the year, such as the University Foundation Day, Teachers' Day, Independence Day, etc.
The college life is overall very lively as well as enriching and motivating.

INFRASTRUCTURE & TRANSPORTATION
6/10

There is one hostel each for the male and female students of the University - the Eden Hindu Hostel for boys, and the Presidency University Girls' Hostel. The hostels are equipped with all the basic amenities necessary for accommodation. They also have their own libraries and a mess system.

ACADEMICS & FACULTY
9/10

Classes are held in accordance with the college working timings, which is from 10 am to 5 pm. There are usually 3-5 classes on an average every day for 5 days a week, and each class is 50 minutes long, leaving some free periods and recess time. There are internal assessments or mid-semester exams, and end-semester exams conducted for each paper in the course. Projects and assignments, whether a part of the mid-semesters or not, include writing well-researched academic papers, conducting seminars, conferences, and other departmental events such as fairs. The more innovative and creative the professor is, the more eventful and enjoyable the projects they assign become. Classroom teaching quality is par excellence, not just because of the content taught, but also the methods implemented in teaching. Learning is not just limited to classrooms anymore, both literally and figuratively.

Presidency University, Kolkata is one of the most well-reputed autonomous colleges in the nation, whose alumni includes many famous personalities who are revered nationally as well as internationally. Although the University is now quite infamous for politics among the Eastern college circle, the politics that the students here practice is one for the implementation and rightful conduction of every student's basic rights and duties as citizens of the nation.

The overall college experience is really good and enriching here at Presidency University.

FEES AND SCHOLARSHIP
7/10

Presidency University, [PU] Kolkata Fee Structure. The fee for my Humanities course is Rs 1260 per semester.

The course fee includes the examination fee. The departments that conduct practicals and/or field visits may have a little higher fee structure.

Loans are usually not needed, for students can avail scholarships based on their merit, and relevant to their needs. The notice for every other scholarship is on display on the LCD Screens throughout the Administrative Building, as well as on the University website.

PLACEMENTS & ALUMNI NETWORK
6/10

Job placements are conducted annually starting from around the end of a calendar year and continuing on to the next. Only the students of an outgoing batch are eligible for applying to these placements. Placements for internships are generally not conducted by the University as such. However, students do take up internships through sources outside the campus.

The students of the Humanities streams are generally hired for job roles like Content Writing, Proofreading, Human Resource, Programme Analyst Trainee, by some of the well-known companies like Cognizant, Papertrue, and Adrosonic.

The placement tests conducted by the companies are enough gruelling, to make sure that they hire only the best from the campus. However, since all the job roles are non-technical and entry-level, the average salary ranges around 3 to 4 lacs per annum.

Eligibility Criteria and Admission Process

Admission to Presidency University is done through their entrance exams, viz. PUBDET (for the Bachelor's courses) and PUMDET (for the Master's courses), that is conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations (WBJEE) Board.

Eligibility depends on whether or not the percentage of marks of one's last highest degree (Class XII board exams or Bachelor's degree) meets with the minimum marks required to apply to the course they want to pursue. Even if the marks of one's last highest degree is yet to be published, they can still appear for the entrance exam. However, the entrance exam scores will only be valid if the eligibility criteria are fulfilled later.

The general cutoff for a Master's course (when I had applied back in 2018) was 55%. Reservation for SC/ST candidates was according to the State guidelines.

All relevant information regarding the eligibility and procedure for admission can be availed in detail on the University website.

  • The main attraction of the university is Milieu. It is a 4-day program with performances from both students and eminent artists and bands. Apart from Milieu, there are programs like ISPAT and ICON staged by two different student unions. Students play with colors during Holi and stage several other cultural events. Sports events also happen in Presidency University.

INFRASTRUCTURE & TRANSPORTATION
4/10
  • The university has two good canteens with sufficient and good quality food.
  • The infrastructure of the college is somewhat not good. Although Chemistry and several Biology labs have good facilities, the computer lab in Statistics dept. have computers of dual core processor with Windows XP and almost all of them had a virus. The computers are painstakingly slow. Free wi-fi is there for all students and the library is up to the standards.

PLACEMENTS & ALUMNI NETWORK
1/10
  • The academics is top class, there is no placement or internship cell to take care of placements or internships. As after Master degree the students of this university are considered to do a Ph.D., the placement part is not taken care of. But like me, there are many students who find it very hard to get placed. There is a handful of key companies viz Mu-Sigma or HSBC who come for placements only for Economics students and they hire only 2-5 students at the max. So the placement part is very poor for this institution. I just hope as the university evolves into a top class university, the problem will be taken care of.

FEES AND SCHOLARSHIP
6/10
  • There are no scholarships available for students in Presidency University, the tuition fee is somewhat too low to take a loan. The reason being that it is a government college. But scholarship based on performance and merit is a very good idea to inspire students to do good in their academics and bring out new ideas.

ACADEMICS & FACULTY

  • Although Presidency as a university got established in 2011, it is making progress towards a top class university in the world. With dynamic course structure keeping in mind of current research and topic that are happening it is rocketing towards one of the elite institutions in India and of the world. Due to the semester system, exams and assignments are there all over the year, although there is a lot of time to relax where a student can enjoy in outdoor games like cricket or football and indoor games like carom or table tennis. 70-80% faculties are Ph.D. and even some of them earned their Ph.D. degrees from universities in Europe or the US. This makes Presidency very rich in terms of faculty quality and academics.
