IBB was established in 2002 at the Savitribai Phule Pune University under the University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) grant of University Grants Commission. The focus of IBB is to promote high quality research and develop technically skilled human resource in the area of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology.
There vision is to achieve excellence at the global level in research and manpower development in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology. The Institute will stand for integration of basic research with industrial applications in greater interest of national achievements in this era of Modern Biology. Development of cutting edge technologies, imparting high quality education and conducting research in forefront areas are the main features of the Institute.Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology (IBB), Pune was established in 2002. The college is an autonomous institute with an affiliation to the University of Pune. It is approved by University Grants Commission (U.G.C). The College offers Post Graduate courses and Ph.D. in Biotechnology. The main focus areas for research are metabolic disorders, biofilms, drug development, environmental biotechnology and bioenergy. Every year, IBB conducts an open entrance exam to select new admissions from students who have completed their XII Std.

IBB main vision is to achieve excellence at the global level in research in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology. It provide best education in the highly competitive field of biotechnology and bioinformatics. The college has separate hostels for boys and girls. Every year admissions begin in month of June-July.
