The Grant Government Medical College was established in the year 1845. The college is considered as one of the premier institutions of India. It is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals comprises of 4 medical institutes which include, Sir J.J. Hospital, St.Georges Hospital, Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital, Cama and Albless hospital. GMCJJH is located in Mumbai, the commercial capital of India. It is a State Government Medical college and situated in 44 acres of area with 46 buildings.
The College has been a source of quality education to budding physicians, consistently ranking in the top 10 Medical colleges all over India. It focuses on providing its students with the tools to achieve medical success. The institute is renowned for the award-winning research work of Robert Koch on Vibrio Cholera and Sir V M Haffkine/Waldemar Haffkine on the Plague Vaccine and their likes.

The Name "Grant Medical College" was proposed by the famous Sanskrit scholar Jagannath Shankarsheth to honour Sir Robert Grant. On the 30th of March 1843, the foundation stone was laid and the college became a reality on 3rd November 1845 and thus started the Grant Medical College. Likely, with the plans and foundation of the college, it was also decided with the aid of donation offered by Sir Jamshetjee Jejeebhoy, to substitute the previously existing Native general hospital in the city by creating the Sir JJ. Hospital. On the 3rd January 1843, the foundation stone was laid and it was opened for the reception of the sick from 15th May 1845. The Motto of the institution is 'SOUND MIND IN SOUND BODY'.
