Chennai Mathematical Institute is an autonomous institute founded in 1989 as a part of the SPIC Science Foundation and is a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the mathematical sciences, the institute was moved into its new campus on 5 acres of land at the SIPCOT Information Technology Park in Siruseri in October 2005.

CMI is managed by eminent persons of Governing Council, and is recognized as a university under the UGC Act 1956 and will henceforth award PhD degrees directly.

The areas of research at CMI are Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics. In addition to  PhD programme, the institute conducts B.Sc programmes in Mathematics and Computer Science,Physics, along with MSc programmes in Mathematics, Applications of Mathematics and Computer Science.

• The Institute has involved in a project distributed computing systems under the Indo-French Networking programme. A 3-year Indo-French research collaboration involving CMI and ENS de Cachan has been initiated in 2008 under the ARCUS programme, funded by Region Ile de France.
• The Institute has exchange programmes with the Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris and the Ecole Normale Superieure de Cachan. 
• CMI had sponsored research projects with Honeywell Technology Solutions Laboratory, Bangalore, Siemens' Corporate Technology research centre, Bangalore and Tata Research Development and Design Centre, Pune.
