The All India Institute of Speech and Hearing [AIISH] is an autonomous institute which is fully funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. AIISH was established in the year 1966 and aims to conduct research, impart professional training and also educate the public on issues relating to some communication disorders like fluency, hearing impairment, phonological and language disorders.

AIISH admission can be done online by submitting the application. Initially, the institute had one post-graduate program in 1965 but, currently, they offer many courses which include 3 Diploma programs such as Diploma in Training Young Hearing Impaired Children, Diploma in Hearing Aid and Earmould Technology and Diploma in Hearing Language and Speech-through distance mode; 1 Certificate course; 2 Under-Graduate programs such as B.Sc. in Speech and Hearing and B.S.Ed in Hearing Impairment; Post-Graduate Diploma programs in Forensic Speech Science and Technology and Clinical Linguistics. Apart from all these courses the institute also offers PhD programs in Audiology; Speech-Language Pathology and Post-Doctoral Fellowships.

AIISH has been recognized by the World Health Organization as a Centre of Excellence in the area of Deafness, as a Science and Technology Institute by the Department of Science and Technology and as a center for Advance Research by University Grants Commission. The number of Under-Graduates and Post-Graduates graduating from the institute is 1,148 and 915 respectively. Also, 43 PhDs have already been awarded under the guidance of the faculties of the institute.

AIISH Diploma:

All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) aims at giving proper training to its students in repair and maintenance of hearing aids and also in ear mould technology. The importance is given more to practical training and the student trainees are given hand on experience in the preparation of ear moulds and also in the repair of different types of hearing aids.

The Post-Diploma program aims at imparting knowledge in the field of language development as well as its disorders. Initially, the program prepares the students to undertake inter-disciplinary research in the areas of language, cognition, and speech. Further, the program enhances students by equipping them with speech-language pathologists.

AIISH Under-Graduation:

The undergraduates of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (B.ASLP) study about the disorders of speech, language, and hearing. The students are given training in the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and management of communication disorders. Whereas, the undergraduates of Special Education in Hearing Impairment (B.S.Ed. (HI)) study about the approaches and methods for educational management of children with hearing impairment. It also prepares general educators to become special educators.

AIISH Post-Graduation:

The postgraduation program in Audiology provides detailed information on differential diagnosis, normal aspects of the auditory system and differential management of auditory disorders. Further, they are also trained on the acts pertaining to disabilities and also to identify research needs that may help in upgrading diagnostic and rehabilitative services. The PG program in Speech-Language Pathology imparts skills and knowledge which are applicable to the profession of Speech-Language Pathology. The program also focuses on the management of communication disorders, differential diagnosis; the PG program of Special Education in Hearing Impairment (M.S.Ed. (HI)) focuses on fulfilling the needs of planning educational programs and making policy decisions.

AIISH PhD:

The doctorate program in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology focuses on increasing the quality as well as quantity of research in Audiology and Hearing Sciences. Many faculties of AIISH are recognized by the University of Mysore as guides for PhD.

AIISH Scholarship:

The All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) offers many scholarships for various types of programs. Some of the scholarships offered by the institute are mentioned below:

Scholarship for Diploma program: 

Students admitted to the Diploma program will be given INR 250 per month for 10 months.

Scholarship for Under-graduate program: 

Students qualifying the entrance examination for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology will be given INR 800 per month for 10 months in the first 3 years. However, for the 4th year, the stipend will depend on their placement in the various regions of the country. If the student gets placed in any North-Eastern State, the stipend would be INR 6,000 per month and for other states, the stipend would be INR 5,000 per month. Students of Special Education in Hearing Impairment will be given a stipend of INR 400 per month for 10 months.

Scholarship for Post-graduate diploma program: 

Students admitted to the PG diploma program would get a stipend of INR 500 per month for 10 months. 

Scholarship for Post-graduate program: 

Students admitted to the M.Sc. course would get a stipend of INR 1,300 per month for 10 months. However, the students of M.Ed. would receive a stipend of INR 650 per month for 10 months.

Fellowship for the Ph.D. program: 

Fellowship would be awarded to four students every year as:

  • INR 20,000 per month for the I year.
  • INR 22,000 per month for the II year.
  • INR 25,000 per month for the III year. HRA will be as per rules.
  • INR 20,000 per annum contingency grant.

AIISH Fee Structure:

AIISH offers many specializations in Diploma, Under-Graduation, Post-Graduation, and PhD. AIISH fee structure is mentioned below:

  • The annual fee for the Diploma course is INR 500 for General category and INR 250 for SC/ST category.
  • The annual fee for the Undergraduate course is INR 1,000 (25% for SC/ST category is refundable).
  • The annual fee for the Postgraduate Diploma course in Clinical Linguistics for SLP and Forensic Speech Sciences & Technology is INR 1,000 (25% for SC/ST category is refundable) and INR 10,000 respectively.
  • The annual fee for the Ph.D. course is INR 2,000.

  • Guest Houses: The institute has two guest houses, Ashoka International Guest House which is located in the Pachavati campus of the institute and AIISH Guest House which is located in the main campus (Naimisham) of the institute. 
  • Hostels: The institute has two hostels, one for ladies and other for gents. The accommodations are in the form of single, double or triple rooms.
  • Kuteera: The Kuteera is located within the campus. It has 12 double rooms and 2 dormitories. Each of the double rooms is provided with 2 cots and one chair, table, fan, tube lights, cloth hangers.
  • Canteen: The canteen at AIISH caters to both staff and students. It has a modern kitchen and the food is served from 9:30 to 17:30. Only vegetarian food is served in the canteen.

Undergraduate - Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology
  • Candidates who have cleared 2nd year PU examination conducted by the PU Board of the Karnataka State or any other 10+2 examination which is considered equivalent by the University of Mysore.
  • Candidates should have studied at least three subjects among Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.
  • Candidates should not have obtained less than 50% aggregates (45% for SC/ ST) in PCMB in their 2nd PUC or qualifying examination.
Undergraduate - Special Education in Hearing Impairment
  • Candidates who have cleared any degree examination of the Mysore University or any other examination which is recognized as equivalent by the Mysore University.
  • Candidates should not have obtained less than 50% aggregates (45% for SC/ ST) in the qualifying examination.
  • Candidates who are not above 30 years of age as on 1st of July of the academic year in which admission is taking place.
Postgraduation (Diploma) - Augmentative and Alternative Communication
  • Candidates who cleared any of the below-mentioned examinations of the Mysore University or any other recognized University or Institute with not less than 50% aggregate in the qualifying examination.
  • Candidates who are going to be admitted with the qualifying examination of B.Sc. (Speech  & Hearing)/ B.ASLP and B.S.Ed. would be decided by the college where the program is taking place. 
  • Candidates with the above qualification, who are sponsored from any recognized institution, organization will be given an additional weightage of 2%.
Postgraduation (Diploma) - Clinical Linguistics for Speech-Language Pathology
  • Candidates with a degree in B.Sc. (Speech & Hearing)/ BASLP/ B.ASLP from an institution that is recognized by RCI.
  • Candidates who have minimum 50% of marks are eligible for admission
Postgraduation (Diploma) - Forensic Speech Science and Technology
  • Candidates who have passed in any of the examinations of any recognized University/institute with a minimum pass class in the qualifying examination are eligible to apply.
  • Employees who are working in forensic related fields in forensic laboratories would be given first preference. 
Postgraduation (Diploma) - Neuro-Audiology
  • Candidates who have cleared B.Sc. (Sp. & Hg.)/ BASLP/ B.ASLP or any equivalent course from any other recognized university.
  • Candidates who are having above qualification and are working in electrophysiological lab or sponsored/ deputed from any hospital, institution or medical college will be given an additional weightage of 2%.
Postgraduation (M.Sc.) - Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
  • Candidates with a B.Sc. (Sp. & Hg.)/ BASLP/ B.ASLP degree of the University of Mysore or any
    other University, considered as equivalent thereto with RCI recognition
  • Candidates securing an average of less than 50% of marks are not eligible for admission.
Postgraduation (M.Ed.) - Special Education in Hearing Impairment
  • Candidates with a B.S.Ed. (Hearing Impairment)/ B.Ed.Spl.Ed. (HI) degree of the Mysore University or any B.Ed. (HI) recognized by RCI.
  • Candidates who are not above 35 years of age as on 1st July of the academic year in which admission is likely to take place.
  • Up to 5 years of age relaxation can be considered for the candidates who are in-service with the approval of the Mysore University.

AIISH Admission:

For diploma courses, the students obtaining marks in the qualifying examination which is AIOAT conducted by the RCI for the current academic year will be considered for the candidate's selection. Also, the candidate must submit AIISH application form for the program at the time of admission with the prescribed fee along with the required documents.

For Undergraduate program, an all India entrance examination would be conducted for admission to the program at various centers. The admission would be made on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance examination.

For Postgraduate program in diploma, the eligible candidates will be shortlisted in merit. The admissions will be made according to the merit-cum-reservation policy of the Government of India. Short-listed candidates who are selected on the merit-cum-reservation will undergo counseling. At last, the final selection would be based on the discretion of the Director of the institute.

For Postgraduate program, candidates should not have secured less than 50% of marks in equivalent examinations with RCI recognition (except National Institutes of Importance) would be eligible for selection.

For Ph.D. program, candidates must have cleared the examination of Mysore University or any other examination which is considered equivalent by the Mysore University with a minimum of 55% marks and for SC/ST, the minimum percentage is 50. One year research/ work experience after M.Sc. (SLP)/ M.Sc. (Aud)/ M.Sc. (Sp. & Hg.)/ M.ASLP in addition, the candidates must have also cleared the entrance exam for Ph.D. which is organized by Mysore University.
