Placements and Internships

We get KVPY fellowship, which is ₹5000 per month for first 2 years, then ₹7000 for the next two along with a contingency grant of ₹20000 per year. Besides, we can go for other internships and summer projects. I have done a reading project in Differential Geometry. We have a placement cell which manages industrial placements as well as recruitments in Govt organisations like ISRO and DRDO. However, most of the people opt for PhD in foreign universities. Average package will be around 12-15 lakhs per annum, but as I said, a very small proportion of students go for it. Packages range from 10 lakhs to 25 lakhs per annum. Alumni plays a very crucial role in the life of the students. They are doing their PhDs in various locations around the globe and recommend good places for pursuing further education based upon their experience. The UG programme started in 2011, so it's a very small community, with an intake of nearly 120 students every year. But being the top-most ranked institute in the nation, we get our fair share of a wholesome academic exposure and an environment that caters to variety of inetersts in the field of science and research.

College Infrastructure and Hostel Facilities

10-12 hostel blocks, accomodating a total of 3000 students. No two hostel blocks are alike. Hostel and mess fees: ₹5000 per month. No idea about PGs I would say its far better than what I have heard about other colleges. There are 4 messes: A: South Indian Veg, B : North Indian composite, C: South Indian composite, D: North Indian Veg. We get 4 meals a day. We get chicken 4 days a week, fish twice and mutton once a week. All other meals in lunch and dinner have eggs. This is in 2 composite messes. The 2 veg messes give fair share of decent dishes as well. Mess charges are included in Hostel and Mess charges, which is 5000 per month. No additional amount need to be paid. There's WiFi in nearly every building, other than hostels. That's a big issue we are dealing with and will be sorted out soon. Besides, there are certain common rooms meant for sitting and surfing using the high speed IISc WLAN. High speed is required for the state of art research and laboratories. The JN Tata Memorial Library is one of the best institute libraries across the country. Some labs have exquisite instruments with high end facilities and security systems, while some UG Labs need a little improvement, which are bound to happen. Besides, there is a Gymkhana, which includes courts for Badminton, tennis, a gymnasium, equipment for chess, billiards and many other games. Outside the Gymkhana building, there are grounds for football, cricket and a ground meant for common sports and athletics. There is a table for Table-tennis in nearly every hostel and of course in Gymkhana as well. There are 3 standard cafeterias and one restaurant, which stay open covering 'together' a wide range around the clock, starting from 7 in the morning to 2 in the night.

Academics and Faculty

Classes start at 8:30, each class lasts 1 hour, there is a 30 mins break at 10:30, then a 1 hour lunch break at 1:00 pm, then lab hours from 2:00 to 5:00. Saturday and Sunday are holidays. We will be studying all the subjects in the first 3 semesters, then we choose our major. There are mid-sems and end-sems, besides some quizzes and tests. Being the top-rated research institute in the country, it provides us with highly distinguished professors who have pursued their PhDs and post-docs from top 20 institutes in the world. So quality of teaching is undoubtedly impeccable. Lectures are mostly delivered using PowerPoint slides and lecture notes are mailed to us by the teaching assistants. There is no ragging, absolute freedom to do variety of recreational stuff, ambient climate in Banagalore, well connected transportation system, highly academically enriching surrounding, and a lot more, combined together give a very holistic experience for a student doing his bachelor's.

Fees and Scholarships

The tuition fees is INR 10000 per annum, Hostel and Mess charges: ₹60000 Gymkhana fee: ₹1200, Other Academic Expenses: ₹3700, Students Emergency fund: ₹300 [All fees are Annual]. KVPY Scholarship given to all the students who went in trhrough KVPY, which I have mentioned earlier. Other students get institute scholarship. All the students. I don't think so, fees is quite nominal.

Clubs and Associations

5

There are tons of clubs in UG, and students clubs in general. The most powerful of which is the Student's Council. There are also department specific clubs. We UGs conduct an annual tech cum cultural fest, Pravega. It's fun, and we face the real drill since there are very less students to manage the entire things and hence participation by nearly every student becomes crucial. The institute organises the annual freshers and orientation ceremony, Sangam, wherein different cultural events take place. Life depends upon how you perceive. You get the freedom to choose. You can go all guns blazing, living out a life, returning late at night, of course managing the study pressure, or you could stay low profile, stuck in your room doing stuff. You get everything for whatever choice you make.
