3.5 Facilities in the Campus

3.5.1 Hostel and Dining Hall Facilities Separate hostel accommodation for male and female students is available in the campus. Nearly 3000 students, including about 500 girls, are housed in various hostels on campus. Two hostels, each of capacity 600, have been built recently. Girl students are housed in single rooms in one of these hostels. UG boys in their first two years will be housed together in a single hostel and provided with single rooms. At present, there are two messes that cater to the tastes of a variety of cuisines from different parts of India. The students are required to abide by the hostel/mess rules in force.

3.5.2 Recreation The Gymkhana in the Institute campus is the centre of all cultural and extra-curricular activities of the students. It has some of the best sports facilities in Bangalore with a cricket ground, tennis courts, swimming pool, cinder track, indoor badminton court, billiards, table tennis tables, etc. A well-equipped gymnasium with the latest multi-trainer and wall-bar equipment is another attraction. It also has indoor and outdoor auditoria. The Ranade library, attached to the Gymkhana, has a collection of 10,000 books and subscribes to over 50 magazines. A well-maintained outdoor swimming pool, a T.V room, music and reading rooms, and a snack parlor situated in the premises, are all very popular. Film, Music, Yoga, Nature, Debating and Photography Clubs are being nurtured by the Gymkhana. 3.5.3 Health Centre The Institute provides medical facilities to students and staff at the Health Centre. An out-patient clinic and in-patient wards are administered by full-time professional doctors and nursing staff. In addition, specialist consultancy services are provided in Medicine, Ophthalmology, Dental Health, Psychiatry and Gynaecology. Cases requiring other specialist services are referred to the appropriate Medical Centres in the city. The Health Centre has a diagnostic laboratory, an X-ray facility and non-invasive diagnosis by ultrasonography.

  • The place is usually very calm and serene. So don’t expect a loud and lousy atmosphere. It is green, very green. If you’re coming to Bangalore for the first time, you will be in awe while strolling through Gulmohar marg in campus. It is usually a little cold all the time. So do carry a blanket with you. At times it just rains and rains and never stops. Campus becomes a little gloomy (cause I don’t like rains a lot). There will be a lot of work and most of it would be hard, at least in the first semester. This is because you are being adjusted to world class level. There are a lot of clubs, different lingual samitis and a great music group Rhythmica. There are lot of males in Engineering and very few females. This ratio improves in departments like Biology.
  • In Undergrad also there are going to be many more males than females, just like in an IIT. There are a lot of students in IISc. Your life can get as social as you want. This is important since many people like to be with very few people and IISc is good with that. Students hang at Night canteens often. There are excellent sports facilities. There are two grounds, a tennis court, basketball court, volleyball court and a gym as well. I am not much into sports, hence my list could be incomplete. Mess food is not great, but its very much manageable. You get non-veg meals everyday. The main canteen (Prakruti) is very good and serves all sorts of food from breakfast to dinner. There is an ambient restaurant (Nesara) right in the middle of the campus. There are plenty of night canteens as well (3+).

  • Students' Council IISc The Students' Council (SC) is the representative body of the entire student community of the Indian Institute of Science. We are the interface between the students and the administration and we work together to identify and address concerns that affect the students directly and indirectly. It represents the interests of the students and participates in discussions and decisions that affect the student community. We aim at the all round development of students and organize several extra curricular events through the year in association with the Gymkhana and the various activity clubs on campus. SC also coordinates the student volunteer effort for the Institute events that are organized periodically. We also provide an opportunity to be a part of activities, motivated by our sense of social responsibility and aimed at giving back to society. The SC is led by the Governing Council constituted by the Chairman, the General Secretary, the Secretary - Academic Affairs and the Secretary - Women's Affairs .
