As NTSE is a two-stage exam, students have to satisfy the below eligibility criteria to write the NTSE exam at each level besides the standard eligibility.

Candidates Studying in India

Only students selected from the state-level examination (depending on quota) can appear for NTSE conducted by NCERT in mid-December every year (unless notified otherwise). Students can download the national level admit card from the online portal, containing all details and exam instructions.

NTSE State Level Examination

All students studying in class X in any recognised school can write the state-level NTSE examination. However, students can write the exam from any state, considering that every state has its eligibility criteria. Students registered under open and distance learning are also eligible for the exam, provided the student's age should not exceed 18 years.

NTSE National Level Examination

All students of Indian nationality studying in class X are eligible to write the exam even outside India. Students also have to check eligibility criteria depending on where they study.

Candidates Studying Abroad

Students of Indian nationality studying abroad at the class 10 level may also compete for the talent search award.

Awards for candidates studying abroad are offered under the following conditions given below.

  • Students with Indian nationality studying abroad are exempt from the state-level examination and can sit directly for the national-level exam conducted by NCERT.
  • Students should have a minimum of 60% marks in the previous examination (IX) to write the exam.
  • Students should travel to India and to the city where their exam centre is. No monetary support will be provided to travel to the centre of examination.

  • The council shall allot roll numbers to the eligible candidates and inform them about the examination date, time, venue, and other relevant instructions.
