Sikkim Manipal University Directorate of Distance Education (SMU DE) was established in the year 2001 under Sikkim Manipal University. Sikkim Manipal University is a unique public-private partnership between the Government of Sikkim and Manipal Education and Medical Group launched in the year 1995.

SMU-DE, the distance education arm of SMU offers courses MBA, MCA, BCA and BBA courses which are recognised and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

2. How is distance education different from correspondence courses?
   - In a correspondence course, students do not have the benefit of a teacher, and are expected to study on their own using self learning material. On the other hand, distance education is structured and allows learners to learn at their own pace and place with self learning materials and teachers guidance.

3. Is attending classes mandatory in distance learning?
   - Attendance is not compulsory, students can access learning materials and teachers at their convenience.

4. Is there a convocation at the end of the completion of the course?
   - Yes, the university holds an annual convocation between September and December for which the students are invited.
