Sacred Heart College (Autonomous) was founded by a missionary from Spain Fr. Joseph Carreno, established in the year 1951. Started with just 85 students and 10 teachers now it is one of the biggest autonomous institution in the region. It is recognised as the best postgraduate and research institution. It was conferred with autonomous status in the year 1988-89 for their PG course MA (Economics) and on all the UG course. In 2019 it was reaccredited with 'A+' Grade by NAAC with CGPA of 3.31 out of 4. It was ranked 95th best college in India by Government of India. The institution is affiliated with Thiruvalluvar University. In 2008 the institution introduced 'Choice Based Credit System'. The institution is accredited by NAAC, recognised by Govt. of Tamil Nadu
