Regional Institute of Education,[RIE] Bhopal was established in 1963 by the Government of India under the constituent of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). NCERT was established by Government of India in 1961 as an autonomous organisation for the qualitative improvement of both Central and State school education. Four RIEs were set up in 4 regions covering various states.  The objective of the Regional Institute of Education was to improve school education qualitatively through innovative pre-service and in-service education programmes and relevant activities like research and development. 

Regional Institute of Education facilities include library, ET Cell, labs, auditoriums, dispensary, post office, bank, canteen and hostel facilities. Regional Institute of Education, Bhopal has a model school attached to it for demonstration and trying out innovative practices. RIE offers courses in Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. Placement opportunities are provided to its students.

RIE placement cell provides placements for its students. Undergraduate students of RIE have been placed in Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodhaya Vidyalayas, DAVs and other similar reputed schools in India. RIE M.Ed students are usually employed at teachers training colleges as teacher educators. Students who have completed Diploma in Guidance & Counselling have been recruited as counsellers at various schools and colleges across the country.
