Yes, there are various societies which organize various events depending on their works. TEMPEST is the major college fest which includes Cultural, Sports, and Technical events. It is been organized by the Cadets of the college. College life is good. One can learn various things which are useful for shipping life as well as in normal routine life.

There are basically 4 hostels one for each year. Hostels are good and also new constructions are going on so the quality of hostels is also improving. Hostel fees, Mess and laundry Charges are included in the fees. Staying in the hostel is compulsory for all the students. Quality of classrooms is also good and under renovation, some classrooms have Air Conditioner also. WiFi facility is available in hostels as well as in college Building. Cadets also have the facility of Library in the college which includes many books and magazines related to marine and engineering fields.

Attending classes regularly is compulsory because there is a rule to have minimum 85% attendance to give the semester exams. Classes are conducted on regular basis from 9:30 am to 17:00 pm with one hour of lunch break from 13:00 pm to 14:00 pm. Quality of teaching is good as many professors are the pass out of this College who sailed on the ships and then came back for teaching. Overall it's a good learning experience if one wants to learn and enjoy engineering with a good hostel life and also at the same time companies starts their recruitment from the 5th semester.

Fees for B.Tech(Marine Engineering) is 2,25,000/- INR per year. Cadets who score good marks in semester exams get the scholarship from the Indian Maritime University, Chennai. One who tops the university gets 1,00,000 INR and those who rank from 2 to 30 in the semester exams gets INR 75,000 each and those who rank from 31 to 60 gets INR 50,000 each. Yes, Education loan is required to pay such a huge amount of fees every year. It is available from any bank as per your preference.

According to the curriculum the cadet has to undergo 6 months training on a ship in the last semester i.e. 8th semester for completing the graduation. Stipend depends upon company to company ranging from 300$ to 1000$ p.m. The companies are NYKSM, MSC, Anglo Eastern Shipmanagent Ltd., Great Eastern Shipping LTD, Thome Shipmanagent, Shipping Corporation of India. After getting the degree Cadet has to clear MEO Class 4 examination conducted by Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) under the DG Shipping India To become a licensed Marine Engineer. The salary varies from company to company and ship to ship from 1500$ to 3000$ p.m. Every year around 50-60% Cadets gets placement. There is a great network of Alumni around the global world in many shipping companies. Some of them are heading the shipping companies.


Eligibility Criteria and Admission Process

Eligibility criteria are 10+2 from PCM stream with minimum 60% in PCM for B.Tech (Marine Engineering). Should be less than 25 years of age. There is an Entrance Exam known as Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test ( IMU-CET) for the admissions in the colleges under Indian Maritime University, Chennai. There are basically two rounds of counseling. The cutoff for the First Round of General Cat. Is around 1000 rank in IMU-CET and for the Second Round is around 1700 rank in IMU-CET.

Generally, internships take place in the 8th semester which you can either do from any Port authority or onboard (that is, on the ship). The stipend varies from company to company, the average being 30000 Indian rupees per month. The salary ranges from 90k to 2 lakhs per month for the starters and increment are good. Key companies are NYK, Fleet Management, Chellships, etc.


Eligibility Criteria and Admission Process

The best in India, and the 2nd Best in Asia, MERI has been a brand for Marine Engineering students in India. For admission, one needs to apply for the IMU CET exam, generally held during the month of May. But to apply, you need to have a Science background in High School with 60 percent and above marks in the board's exam in all the science subjects and English too. Once you are eligible, you have to make sure you rank within 600 in the exam to get through this college. Placements are good and nearly 100 percent except for the candidates who have arrears during the time of Campus Interview.

College is like quite strict in the first year but overall it prepares you for what awaits you in life

MERI Kolkata is a government college thus the options while choosing a company is limited. The training program takes place in the last semester on board in a vessel your company owns. A few companies that come for placements are NYK, MSC, Fleet Management, SCI, Anglo-Eastern. A sum of INR 15-25000 is paid per month during the training and packages can go up to INR 50-60000 per month. The alumni network for this college is very strong. Your alumnus will treat you like family.

Just like any other bachelor's course, you need to apply for college while you are a Class 12th pass. You need to apply through website imu.edu.in where you will get the dates for the exams and other specific details regarding the course. On the website, during the end of a year, the admission forms are available for the entrance exam that goes by the name IMU-CET. Class 12th marks do not affect the selection. It's completely based on the CET results.

  • It is mandatory for the students to stay in the hostel and no student can reside in pg or home. The institute has 4 hostels one for each year. The hostel fee, laundry fee and mess fee is included in the total fee. So you don't have to give any extra fee for these things.
  • The hostels are good and 4 students reside in one room during the first and second year, 3 in a room in the 3rd year and single rooms are provided in the 4th year.
  • There are 4 mess,one for each year. The mess provides good and healthy food for you.
  • The college doesn't provide wifi inside the campus, but there are various LAN providers who provide a broadband connection at cheaper rates. The quality of classrooms and labs are fine. Some classroom are air conditioned.
  • The working hour of the library is from 9am to 7pm from Monday to Friday. It will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

  • A large marine diesel engine is separately provided in the campus to know its working.

  • After that annual sports meet is organised by the cadets every year it is as intra-college sports meet.
  • The life in the college is very simple and general we get our full time and chance to shape our career and dreams.

  • As the college is very old so there are many old buildings too but overall infrastructure is very good.
  • There are six hostels in total in our college named as Junior Hostel (for first-year cadets), East Wing, West Wing, Outer Block Complex, Senior Hostel and Girls Hostel.
  • No cadet is allowed to live outside the college during training and fall-in is convened three times a day at 0600hrs, 0830 hrs, and 2030hrs.
  • After that meal is served three times a day and tea at evening in the mess.
  • All hostel and mess charges are included in the semester fees which are paid every semester and no extra charge is demanded.
  • Apart from this, we've got the gym, swimming pool, basketball court,a football ground, a cricket ground, a table tennis room, a badminton court and a hockey ground for the sports and fitness activities in our college.
  • TV rooms are also available for cadets at Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Kolkata.

  • But we need to pay examination fee for each semester as declared by the University.
  • There are different types of scholarship options available for cadets under training which are following :
  • 1. Rs. 1,00,000 for the cadet who has scored highest mark in the semester
  • 2. Rs. 75,000 for the top 30 scoring cadets after the topper
  • 3. Rs. 50,000 for the next top 30 scoring cadets after top 31 cadets.
  • 4. LLOYD'S REGISTER gives a scholarship of Rs. 50,000 to five cadets from the fifth-semester cadets who are ranked as top 20 in the college after taking interviews.
  • 5. after these there are many other schemes of government for scholarships.
  • In the case of loan I can't say that if a student needs loan or not it totally depends on his / her economical condition in my case there was no other way that taking loan because I'm a son of a poor farmer anyhow I managed to reach to this institution with my hard work facing many odds.
  • It's very easy to get an education loan for this college from SBI which has opened a branch in the college campus cadets don't need to go far away.
