Indira Gandhi Engineering College Sagar ranks 4th among the five government autonomous engineering colleges in Madhya Pradesh. Established in November 1981 by the Government of Madhya Pradesh to promote industrial development in the Bundelkhand region, the college was originally named Government Engineering College Sagar, later renamed to Indira Gandhi Engineering College Sagar. The institute began operations at its initial location near Dr. Hari Singh Gour University Sagar. In December 1986, the college relocated to a newly constructed campus spread over 220 acres of land, allocated by the Madhya Pradesh government in 1985. The new campus is situated on a hillock near Baheriya Village, approximately 10 km from Sagar City.

The college commenced with an intake of 40 students in the Bachelor of Engineering program in 1981. This five-year course allocated branches in the third year. The intake capacity was increased to 80 in 1983, and new branches were introduced: Civil Engineering in 1984-85, Mechanical Engineering in 1985-86, Electrical Engineering in 1988-89, Electronics and Communication Engineering in 1990-91, and Information Technology in 2000.

Initially affiliated with Sagar University, the college became affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal, in 2000. Recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), all its courses are approved by AICTE in line with regulatory guidelines.
