“Leading the way among the management institutions in Goa, Goa Institute of Managment is known to be providing rigorous curriculum. But does its intense courseworks, designed to strengthen the mindset, ultimately suffocates the students?"

Industry-based teaching, highly experienced faculties, top notch placements are some of the important aspects which attract MBA aspirants towards the Goa Institute of Management. Known for its vibrant campus, GIM pulls MBA aspirants from across the country. However, due to its costly course and hostel fee, GIM often feels like an unswallowable pill.

It also seems that GIM might also have gone the edge a bit more than expected in terms of setting the rigour of the course curriculum. Designed with a focus on the current market trends, Goa Institute of Management's programmes are famous for keeping the students busy till the end of their graduation. However, students can often be found concerned about certain courses being outdated and needing to be revamped to be abreast with the latest developments.

Table of Contents

Industry-Centric Curriculum

With accreditations from NBA and SAQS, the Goa Institute of Management offers residential Post Graduate Diploma in Management courses. Among all the courses offered at the Goa Institute of Management, PGDM is a flagship course. The course structure has been designed as per the current industrial standards and requirements. As mentioned earlier, as per various reviews of students on search portals, they have been vocal about updating a few of the course curricula with relevant topics.

To make the classes interactive, various projects and group discussions are arranged. Not only this, the emphasis is mostly oriented towards presenting the students with real-world scenarios so that they prepped in accordance with the corporate world.

Experienced Faculties

With over 30 years of its existence, Goa Institute of Management is known for its teaching. Faculties at the institute come a balance of academic and industry experiences. Students at the GIM can approach faculties for any doubts and clarifications. The faculties are also friendly and approachable.

The faculties themselves continuously engage with the industries to stay abreast with the latest developments. As per the students' insights, some of the faculties are from the top-tier institutes of the world, such as MIT, Stanford, and more.

Hefty Course Fees

The GIM fee structure is quite concerning for aspiring students. Studying at GIM is an opportunity any student would never want to miss. On average, students have to spend more than INR 18 lakh on course fees alone. Apart from this, they also need to pay for their accommodation and food. Together combined, many students struggle to cope with paying such high fees.

On top of this, the Goa Institute of Management scholarship scheme is not very welcoming either. Aspiring students can avail loans from the Banks that are tied up with GIM. The banks which have tied up with GIM are Bank of India, State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Bank of Baroda, IDFC First Bank, and Union Bank of India.

Good Placement Rate

The Goa Institute of Management has a dedicated placement committee which thrives to achieve a 100% placement rate each academic year. A dedicated placement committee trains students from the first year of the academics.

The GIM placement committee conducts mock interviews, mock group discussions, aptitude tests, and more. It is also engaged in arming the students with the desired soft skills and other analytical skills that would help them increase their employability.

GIM faculties take personal care of students and observe their progress. Students of the 2021-23 batch secured jobs in various industries like IT, Banking, and Finance.

Well-maintained Campus

Spread over 50 acres in the Sanquelim, Goa, the Goa Institute of Management is known for its well-maintained indoor and outdoor infrastructure. The residential campus has many facilities included. Students can access the internet 24/7 through the Wi-Fi service available.

The campus and hostel are under CCTV surveillance, which makes students feel safe. Hostel rooms are well maintained with regular maintenance. The institute's mess serves food as per the needs of the students. The menu is not repetitive, and the quality of the food served is commendable. Students at the mess committee of the college decide the food menu.

Students are given enough freedom to move out of the hostel/campus. Yet, time restrictions have been levied on students, keeping safety issues in mind. Female students' safety is taken very seriously.

Life at GIM

GIM attracts students from across the country. Hence, it is known for its diversity. Students will be allowed to celebrate major festivals throughout the year. Festival celebrations include cultural events followed by special meals.

Goa Institute of Management has formed student committees. The committees are further divided into 3 types. Campus-focused committees, learning-focused committees, and fun-focused committees are the active committees in the institute.

GIM conducts sports events like basketball, Cricket, Volleyball, etc. Students can also opt for various indoor games available. The institute also has a dedicated yoga trainer on the campus. Also, the campus has a well-maintained swimming pool. GIM conducts freshers day, the annual college fest and celebrates many festivals. Students can take part in cultural events.

Students can hang out at the college cafeteria during their free time. As Goa is known for its tourist attractions, students can visit many places during weekends by getting permission from the management.

Strict Dress Code

GIM is strict when it comes to dress code. Students must wear a complete black suit with a white shirt (for both boys and girls) with black formal shoes. Students must wear suits to classes except one day in which they can wear casual clothes. Since it is a residential B school, students will be often suggested to wear decent clothes during hostel hours as well.

Such stringent dress code often mars the enjoyment factor of the students. Students often expect to express themselves through their sense of style and clothing. However, once they start their journey at GIM, they find themselves restricted in terms of dress code.

International Bootcamps at GIM

The Goa Institute of Management has some of the significant international collaborations. The international collaborations are designed to provide an opportunity for GIM students and faculty members to get global exposure. GIM conducts the International Consulting Bootcamp every year in September in collaboration with the University of Antwerp, Belgium.

Students from the University of Antwerp and GIM work together on live projects based on the current industrial scenarios. These boot camps challenge students to work together in cross-cultural groups.

Should One Consider GIM for MBA/PGDM?

With the industrial approach, teachings and impeccable placement records, GIM is a paradise for MBA/PGDM aspirants. The course and hostel fees are highly overpriced. However, students can avail of bank loans, and GIM also provides scholarships.

If one can take the risk of paying a hefty fee to pursue an MBA degree, they will not be disheartened with the experience at the Institute. Overall, apart from the high course fee, GIM ticks all the boxes of an MBA aspirant. Here’s a look at the pros and cons of GIM:
