Factors Affecting BPUT Cutoff 2026

Several dynamic factors influence the shifting ranks each year at Biju Patnaik University of Technology:

  • Volume of Applicants: A higher number of OJEE/JEE Main registrations directly tightens the cutoff.

  • Exam Difficulty: If the JEE Main or OJEE paper is tougher, the cutoff ranks generally drop (numerical value increases).

  • Seat Matrix: Any increase in intake for CSE or AI branches can lead to a slight relaxation in ranks.

  • Previous Trends: Historic data from the last 3 years shows a steady 5% increase in demand for IT-related fields.

  • Counseling Rounds: Cutoffs move significantly between Round 1 and the Spot Admission round.

How to Check BPUT Cutoff 2026?

  1. Visit the official OJEE counseling website (ojee.nic.in).

  2. Navigate to the "Opening and Closing Ranks" section on the homepage.

  3. Select the specific year (2026), the round of counseling, and the program (B.Tech/MBA/MCA).

  4. Download the PDF of the seat allotment and cutoff data.

  5. Verify your rank against the category-specific closing ranks listed for various colleg

FAQs on Biju Patnaik University of Technology Cutoff

Q: What is the expected BPUT JEE Main cutoff for Computer Science in 2026?

A: For the 2026 academic session, the B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) cutoff at BPUT’s top constituent colleges is expected to remain highly competitive. General category students typically need a JEE Main rank between 45,000 and 1,50,000 for premier government institutes like GCE Keonjhar. However, for many affiliated private colleges, the closing ranks can extend up to 8,50,000. This variation depends heavily on the college's placement record, faculty expertise, and the total number of applicants opting for software-related branches during OJEE counseling.

Q: How does the BPUT category-wise reservation affect the cutoff ranks?

A: BPUT follows the Odisha state reservation policy, providing significant relaxation to reserved categories. While a General category candidate might need a rank under 2 lakh for a specific branch, SC and ST candidates often see closing ranks extended by several lakhs, sometimes reaching up to 12,00,000 to 15,00,000 for core branches. Additionally, there are specific quotas for Green Card holders, Ex-Servicemen, and Physically Challenged (PC) candidates, which significantly lowers the entry barrier compared to the unreserved "General-All" merit list.

Q: Which entrance exams are mandatory for MBA and MCA admissions at BPUT?

A: To secure a seat in MBA or MCA programs at BPUT affiliated colleges, candidates must primarily qualify for the OJEE (Odisha Joint Entrance Examination). For MBA, the university also recognizes national-level scores from CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT, and ATMA. For MCA, while OJEE is the standard route, NIMCET scores are occasionally considered in specific private institutes. The cutoff for top MBA programs usually closes within the top 2,000 ranks in OJEE, whereas MCA cutoffs for government colleges often close around rank 500–1,500.

Q: What is a "Safe Rank" to get into a government engineering college under BPUT?

A: Securing a "Safe Rank" depends on your preferred branch. For high-demand streams like CSE or IT in government constituent colleges such as PMEC Berhampur or GCE Kalahandi, a JEE Main rank under 3,00,000 is generally considered safe for General category students. For core branches like Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering, the safety net is wider, with ranks up to 6,00,000 or 7,00,000 often securing seats. It is always advisable to participate in all counseling rounds, including the spot round, to maximize chances.

Q: Where and how can I check the official BPUT opening and closing ranks?

A: The official cutoffs for all BPUT courses are not hosted directly on the BPUT website but on the official OJEE portal (ojee.nic.in). Once each counseling round concludes, the OJEE committee publishes a detailed "Opening and Closing Rank" PDF. You can filter these by institute, course, and category. To check 2026 data, visit the "Counselling" section of the OJEE site, select your program (e.g., B.Tech or MBA), and download the latest rank statement to compare your merit against the previous year's trends.

Q: Does BPUT conduct its own entrance exam for B.Tech lateral entry students?

A: Yes, BPUT admissions for B.Tech Lateral Entry (for Diploma holders) are conducted strictly through the OJEE Lateral Entry exam. The cutoff for these seats is usually much tighter than regular B.Tech entries because the number of available seats is limited (usually 10% of the sanctioned intake plus vacant seats from the first year). Top-performing students in the OJEE LE exam with ranks under 1,000 typically secure spots in the most reputed government and autonomous engineering colleges in Odisha.

Q: Why do BPUT cutoffs vary significantly between Round 1 and the Spot Round?

A: Cutoffs fluctuate because many students who are allotted seats in Round 1 may opt for IITs, NITs, or other national universities, leaving vacancies. As counseling progresses to Round 2 and the final Spot Admission Round, the university lowers the rank requirements to fill these seats. Consequently, the closing rank in the Spot Round is almost always much higher (more relaxed) than Round 1. Students with lower ranks should remain patient and participate until the final round to secure admission in better colleges.
