Placements and Internships

Being a college of National importance NIT Durgapur stands out from the crowd of many other colleges from internship and placements perspective. Many big companies from various sector come every year for taking interns from NIT Durgapur. The companies include Microsoft, Tata Motors, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, PWC, etc. The average salary of NIT Durgapur remains in the range of 6.5 lpa - 7.5 lpa whereas the highest salary fluctuates a little bit. Previous year it was 32 lpa at Amazon, this year (2018-2019) 10 students placed with the highest package of 40 lpa at Microsoft.

Percentage of students getting placed also varies year to year and departments to departments. The overall percentage of students getting placed from NIT Durgapur is about 70-75%.

Recently NIT Durgapur has strengthened its Alumni network by organizing various Alumni meets much frequently and thereby giving its students an exposure which is helping the students to get placed or to get internships.

College Infrastructure and Hostel Facilities

4

There are in total 9 hostels for boys and 4 hostels for girls. The hostel fees (including mess fees) is nearly about 3-3.5k per month.

There are many PGs outside the college campus available for the students.

The food in the hostel is mediocre (not too good, not too bad). There are various canteens available inside the college campus.

The infrastructure is in the developing stage, some new high rise buildings are in construction stage which, after completion will improve the external beauty of the college.

Classrooms of the new buildings are in awesome condition but the classrooms of the old buildings are in miserable conditions which need improvement.

Central library is there inside the campus with over 1 lakhs of books inside the library.

Wifi and common rooms with TVs are the facilities available in every hostel.

Entrance Exams and Admissions

The eligibility criteria are:- Candidates must give his/her class 12th boards with science stream and must pass his class 12 boards with a minimum aggregate of 75% for general candidates(65% for sc/st students).

The candidate needs to appear for Jee Mains (paper 1) for B.Tech course. After that, based on the rank the candidate secures it will be decided whether he/she gets a seat or not. Counseling is conducted online by JOSAA (Joint seat allocation authority).

The cutoff varies year to year and departments to departments. In the year 2017 cutoff for Mechanical was about 136 for general category (equivalent to a rank of 34.5k), whereas for CSE it was about 15k, for ECE it was about 22k, for Electrical it was about 30k, for Civil it was nearly 40k, for chemical it was 38k, for metallurgy it was about 45k. Whereas for the year 2018 the cutoff rank for every department went down by 5k. For instance cutoff for Mechanical was 28-29k and same for other departments.

Academics and Faculty

4.5

Daily routine at NIT Durgapur is pretty much flexible. The class timings are not fixed every day (though it is scheduled), which means someday there may be 4 classes in the routine, other day there can be 5 classes, with a maximum number of classes possible in a day is 8.

Projects and Assignments are given very often.

Exam routine is as follows:- One exam held at the middle of the semester which is named as mid-sem and the other takes place at the end of the semester which is named as end-sem.

Faculty is kind of mixed bag in NIT Durgapur. There is a combination of both great and worst teachers.

Fees and Scholarships

4.5

The fee structure is pretty much fair as it is based on annual family income. The tuition fee structure is the same as proposed by the Government which prevails at every NITs. Original tuition fees is about Rs 140000 per year. For students whose annual family income is more than Rs 5 lakhs, for them there is no tuition fee waiver, for students whose annual family income is in the range Rs 1-5 lakhs, for them the waiver is 2/3rd of the original tuition fees and for the students with annual family income is less than 1 lakh (and for SC/ST students) the tuition fees is about Rs 13000 per year.

There are various merit cum means scholarship (some based on family income whereas some based on merit) offered by the college. Apart from these, there are some more scholarships for SC/ST students.

Due to this flexible fee structure, in most cases, students don't need to avail loans.

Loans are available easily from the banks inside the campus itself.  There are banks like SBI, Canara from which students can avail loans easily.

Clubs and Associations

5

There are various student societies and clubs which makes a college life. Club activities add both fun activities and constructive activities. Various fests are organized by different clubs.

The main and most popular fest is our cultural fest RECSTACY .Then comes our tech fest AAROHAN.The other fests which take place in NIT Durgapur are AAVISHKAR, VERVE, MUKTI, etc.

Overall the college life at NIT Durgapur is up to the expectations. There is full freedom inside the campus, there is no time barrier restrictions regarding entering the hostels (both for boys and girls). Some of the canteens remain open till late at night.
