PLACEMENT CELL

Jesus and Mary College was the first college in Delhi University to start a Placement Cell in 1998. Starting with one company, today there are around 36 reputed companies which hold on-campus interviews for placements.

The Placement Cell is working constantly to provide a variety of opportunities to suit the different needs of  students. The Cell not only provides career opportunities to students but also brings to the students opportunities for internship, fellowship and campus ambassadorship.  It conducts talks and workshops to bridge the knowledge gap between students and companies.

The Cell is managed by students under the guidance of a competent faculty. The students working in the Cell are selected after around of assessment interviews. Currently 6 students both from 2nd and 3rd year are working with the Placement cell.

Hence, JMC is reputed to provide ralatively better placement opportunities to its students,with one of the strongest placement cells in Delhi Universities. But the percentage of students that gets placed would be less because mostly it is the Commerce background that companies look for and most of the students with a Humanities background end up finding jobs on their own.

RESOURCES AND FACILITIES

LOCATION

The college is located in a lush 15 acre campus in Chanakya Puri, the diplomatic area in New Delhi the capital of India.

BUILDING

The  college building, designed by Pawar & Pawar (Northern Construction Company), stands on the solid rock of the Aravalli range, and consists mainly of three buildings: the interconnected teaching and administrative block, the library and the Multipurpose Hall designed by Mr. Ranjit P. John. 

The elegant nun’s residence is set apart, surrounded by a lovely garden. 

Other than the great location, the college has excellent infrastructure to recommend it; The landscaped college grounds are widely admired.

JMC has an old library with a huge collection of books divided on three floors. A unique feature, which no other college under Delhi University provides, is an inhouse gymnasium. The gymnasium is open to membership for only students and staff of JMC. The college, which is also known for its psychology course, has a well-equipped lab.  Also set in the grounds is an amphitheatre. In addition, there are hockey, cricket, lawn tennis, football and basketball fields.

LIBRARY

The Jesus and Mary College library provides access to students to a wide range of scholarly journals and books, growing digital media collections and other printed materials to support research and learning.

The Library is housed in a three-floor building. The well-organised, expertly maintained, fully computerized library has approx. 50,000 books and bound journals, total sitting capacity of about 180 (with provision for adding more), reading halls on all the floors and cubicles for the faculty on the 1st floor. It has been organised as follows:

• The ground floor of the library has circulation counter, Online Public Access Catalogue and Processing Section and Stacks.
• The first floor has the Text-Book Section, Reference-Section, Book-Bank, Periodical Section and Internet-Centre for the Faculty.
• The second floor is dedicated to the bound journals (back-volumes)/Internet-Centre for the students and Counselling-Cell

The library has a provision for book reservations for its users. There are five special sections in the library - Text Books, Reference, Weekly, Periodical and Book Bank. Library database can be accessed through Online Public Access Catalogue. 

SPORTS FACILITIES

The College provides many facilities for sporting activities within its 15 acre campus. There are provisions and equipments for more than 10 different sports. It is therefore no surprise that Jesus and Mary College has for many years won accolades for sporting events within the University. Its students have participated in National and International events and won prizes.

A RICH RANGE OF COURSES

Jesus and Mary College provides a range of courses to allow for different circumstances and needs of women.

While full time under graduate programs and the post graduate programs in English and in Hindi are the main courses offered by the college, it is also the Centre for part time and distance learning programs offered by the Non Collegiate Women Education Board and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

Jesus and Mary College also offers short term certificate programs for its students to prepare them for vocational and professional life.

ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS AT JMC 

Jesus and Mary College offers an integrated all-round education that focuses on the intellectual, social, emotional, aesthetic and spiritual development of every student. The College  which started with 116 students, offering English Hons. and B.A.(Pass) Course, today has over 2500 students and offers 10 Honours Courses,  Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.), and Post Graduation in English and Hindi.

Over the last 43 years, the College has expanded and reached out to thousands of young women who have graduated from the College. The College takes the task of educating young women and training them in responsibility and accountability, to take their positions in a competitive world.

EXPERIENCED FACULTY WITH STRONG ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS

Jesus and Mary College strength is its competent and well qualified faculty.

Faculty in the College are well regarded for teaching and research. They are called upon to be part of Academic Councils, Seminars and Teaching programs.

Additionally the College has a large number of Ad Hoc teachers to ensure teaching support and academic rigor.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University; has one of the best teaching faculties for BA English Honours in the whole of our country, India. The syllabus and learning is taken seriously and the teachers work very hard to inculcate not only the syllabus but familiarize their pupils with the entirety of the History of English Literature and the various divisions of ages, methods and styles of writings, issues pondered and tones of interpretation that could be applied to a particular author's work. The student evolves not just academically, but also psychologically, philosophically and socially. The focus is laid on the overall developement of the student with different interesting takes on teaching the syllabus including projects, research, presentations, lectures etc. The experience as a student has been enriching and rewarding.

The course fee per year is very low and hence completely economical. The total cost include college expenses, extra-curricular expenses, exam expenses and univerisity fees falls between Rs 11,000 to 15,000 as the annual amount for any of the courses.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Fee Concession

Students in need of financial assistance may apply on the prescribed form available at the Accounts Office.

The completed form must reach the cashier by the prescribed deadline.

Until the fee concession is sanctioned all fees must be paid by the student. A refund of payments made at the beginning of the year may be subsequently claimed if the concession is sanctioned.

Student's Aid Fund

Students can avail of financial assistance offered by the Student's Aid Fund. Applications for it must be made on the prescribed form and reach the cashier by 30th August.

Fee concession and assistance from the Students Aid Fund are not available to students repeating a class especially if their failure has been due to neglect of work or irregular attendance.

Book Bank Scheme

A Book Bank Scheme is in operation for needy students. The application form in this respect is available  from the Librarian.

The college also provides ample financial assisance to students who are not financially secure and there are a number of opportunities for students to avail scholarship 

SCHOLARSHIPS

There are number of scholarship opportunities available for students.  

These scholarships recognise merit and talent of students. Students may apply for the Scholarships at the beginning of the academic year.
