Placements and Internships

3.5

Josephs is known for its Arts Departments and there is an end number of fests and activities happening in college. Many times a student gets an internship by attending these fests. However, if a student wants to do an internship based on their choice they need to apply through other means (during their college time).

Placement in Josephs is not up to the power to be compared to any other college, as most of the students here look for further studies. Placement for PG students is an internship extension to a job offer during their last semester. For UG, there are skill development seminars and classes in their last year and then their portfolio is presented to companies. Major recruiters are banks, IT companies or NGOs. The key company roles that are hired are for Banking, HR, and Content Developer.

College Infrastructure and Hostel Facilities

4

By 2020, the college was still renovating, and an entire new Block had recently made function in college. The campus is not very big but the perk is the college is in the center of the city so it is easy to go around and experience the city culture. There are many PG options available nearby as the college has no hostel. There is a small hostel for boys but girls, there are no hostels. The infrastructure of the new blocks is modern but the science block is as old as 1885. The fracture is both new and old, and one can find a century-long history in college vibes.

There is a huge canteen area and independent canteens on every college block. The costs are also reasonable and cuisine from every part of India can be found on campus. The classrooms are well equipped with projectors, wifis, and good ventilation for students.

Entrance Exams and Admissions

Eligibility criteria are usually high for St. Josephs. I was given admission only because I had scored above 90% in Economics at the ISC. There is a walk-in-interview option which is the most popular and the admission is solely based on merit and an interview with your respective department teacher. There are no separate entrance exams for admission and the typical cutoffs are usually above 85% overall or if the student has exceptionally good marks in the subject they would like to pursue.

For admission, one needs to start applying online in April itself and one has to upload their PU 1 and PU2 mark sheet online along with board results. Based on merit, one can be chosen for an interview. The other way is when the college wants to fill its seat and they call for a day or two walk-in interviews. During these interviews, there is still a chance for negotiation if the scores are low overall but sufficient in the subject of choice.

Academics and Faculty

4.5

One of the things Joseph's is famous for is academics.  The staff is highly educated with at least a Masters's in the respective subjects. The quality of teaching is also half theoretical and half practical in nature. There are two semesters in a year and each has Midsemester and end semester examinations. There is a high requirement of attendance and it is added to the total marks at the end of every semester. Apart from exams, there are regular assignments after modules and a compulsory CIA which could be a written assignment or a class presentation.

The quality of teaching is advanced and the teachers expect the students to do well in academics. The reason being most of the students appear for entrance exams and civil exams. The college, however, does lack when it comes to organizing fests and events and there is an inclination towards academics more than extracurricular.

Fees and Scholarships

4.5

Regardless of the fact that St Josephs is a Private College, the fees are much lower than other private universities. The course fee at St Joseph's College of Commerce Autonomous, Bangalore is around 60K to 80K per year. Depending on the course you take and the number of practical classes it needs the fees increases. There are a few management scholarships available for students from a low background which are based on merit.

Clubs and Associations

4.5

There is at least one society in every department. Some even have as many as four. Society activities depend on batch and department. However, most of the activities all year round are organized by the Arts Departments. The science department holds exhibitions and seminars. There are two main events held every year.

College life is peaceful and insightful. Disclaimer: Please do not come with the expectation that there will be a lot of fests and events. The college's priority has always been academics but if one enjoys what they study then college life is very interesting. Especially the student-teacher interaction. The teachers are super friendly and are always there to help with college as well as have personal problems.

The counselors on campus are also very polite and helpful. St Joseph's is a quiet place with strict rules yet the atmosphere is always inspiring and progressing. There is no racism, ragging, or other harassment. It's a safe place for students to adjust to their new background. Teachers in the first year usually pamper their students and even notes are dictated to them in class. From the second year, the students start aging independence as their teachers help them explore various options for studies and activities.
