In lanthanides, the differentiating electrons are filled in 4f orbitals, whereas for actinides, they are filled in 5f orbitals. Since the maximum capacity of an f-orbital is 14 electrons, this means that these elements under the lanthanides and the actinides are able to hold a maximum of 14 electrons in the respective f-orbitals. Hence, there are only 14 lanthanides and 14 actinides.
