Formerly called Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering [VRCE], the institute was established in 1960. This was changed to Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, [VNIT] Nagpur with the Govt. of India conferring on the Institute, the Deemed to be University status with effect from 26th June 2002. VNIT, Nagpur is one of the thirty National Institutes of Technology in the country. The Institute was ranked 5th among the NITs in the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2018.
As per the NIRF report, the institute has been ranked 27th at the All India Level in 2020. Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, [VNIT] Nagpur offers engineering and architectural courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate and research levels. The college has its own Innovations Council which operates through a number of departments led by the most able and experienced faculty, the aim being to foster innovative thinking and entrepreneurial temperament in the students. The placement wing of the college is promising and is frequented by private and public giants such as Goldman Sachs, Sling Media Pvt. Ltd, J.P.Morgan Services, L&T Group, Bajaj Auto, Box8, Lowe’s India, Godrej Industries among many others.
At the undergraduate level, the institute offers two course- B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) and B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture). The B.Tech course is provided in 7 different subjects of specilaization. Details are as given below-
The undergraduate courses are taught on a semester system basis. B.Tech course is for a duration of 4 years, while B.Arch is for 5 years. Admission to the courses is through the entrance tests, followed by centralized counselling conducted by JoSAA/CSAB. Eligibility criteria are as given in the table below-
The postgraduate programmes at the college are M.Tech and M.Sc. M.Tech can be pursued in a total of 20 different specialization subjects. M.Sc is offered in 3 subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Both courses are taught through a semester system over a period of 2 years (4 semesters).
Admission to postgraduate courses is through entrance tests and a centralized counselling process.
Eligibility criteria are as listed below-
Students have the option to carry on with research in their respective fields. A regular Ph.D programme can be anywhere between 3-4 years based on the mode of study. The institute allows both Full-time and Part-time study programmes for Ph.D candidates.
Admission is given through institute advertisement.
Candidates are selected through a written test and interview conducted at the respective department.
Students are given Teaching Assistantship / Fellowship as per GOI, MHRD norms.
Institute also admits candidates nominated under the QIP (Quality Improvement Programme) scheme.

VNIT is one of the most reputed colleges in India. The admission procedure for this college takes place through JEE MAIN Examination conducted by Central Government. To get into this college and particularly CSE branch one must have a score at least 190-200 in the JEE MAIN Examination.
The student should qualify JEE MAINS to seek admission in architecture branch. Apart from this, the student must score more than 75% in respective board examination. The cut-off varies from 230 to 250 for general category.
Admissions are based on the rank of JEE MAIN (previously known as AIEEE). Students with higher rank will get preference. Cut-off generally varies every year.
