Shia PG College was started as a school in 1919 and then rose to an intermediate college in 1922. The degree courses were started in 1947 with B.Sc courses. The college is managed and controlled by the Board of Trustees of Shia College. The college is affiliated with the University of Lucknow.

Even though the college follows Islamic traditions and practices, the college serves students from all communities without any discrimination. Shia PG College offers courses on undergraduate and postgraduate. The college provides facilities like smart classrooms, laboratories, museums, libraries, sports, gymnasium, NSS, NCC, and many other associations including an alumni association.

Shia College has facilities like smart classrooms, laboratories, museums, libraries, sports, gymnasium, computer center, NSS, NCC, and many other associations like literary, social, cultural, and student welfare.

Most of the classrooms are Information and Communication Technology-based smart classrooms. The laboratories are well equipped with modern apparatus and instruments and audiovisual aids like projectors and recorders for providing a better understanding of the topic. The science departments like Zoology, Botany, and Anthropology have museums with a collection of rare and valuable specimens collected from various parts of India over the years.

The central library of Shia college is known as “Khateeb-e-Akbar Maulana Mirza Mohd. Athar Library” has a large collection of books, journals, and periodicals. There are spacious reading rooms for students and faculty to read and prepare notes. The library is also subscribed to a various number of newspapers and magazines. In addition to the central library, there are separate departmental libraries that have exclusive subject books. 

The sports department of the college is sound and students have achieved great positions over the years in cricket, volleyball, football, boxing, hockey, badminton, and bodybuilding. A gymnasium is available in the college for the physical development of the student. The computer center of Shia PG College is equipped with modern computer systems, Wi-Fi, and an electronics lab. 

Shia College has Army and Naval wings of the National Cadet Corps for the undergraduate students. There are 7 units of National Service Scheme in the college which give them practical knowledge of social service and needs of backward sections of the society and helping them. The Student Welfare Association helps the students if they have any problem during college hours and also helps the students to get railway concessions.

Shia PG College admission could be done through both online and offline processes. The online admission process is by filling up the application form available on the official website. The offline process is by obtaining the admission form from the principal’s office. 

Documents required for application for admission are:

• A passport size photograph with name and date of birth printed on it.
• 10th mark sheet/certificate (original + 2 self-attested copies).
• 12th mark sheet/certificate (original + 2 self-attested copies).
• I/II/III year mark sheets of bachelor's degree (for PG admission).
