Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar College, the pioneer college in the Kallarnadu, was founded on July5, 1968 at usilampatti under the auspices of Kallar Kalvi Kazhagam, successor of Kallar Common Fund, a private and non-profit organization registered under T.N. Society laws on December 12, 1967. The College, popularly known as the Thevar College, is situated in an area of acre 54.65 cents, two kilometer east of Usilampatti and on the north of Madurai road. The property was bought off from the kallar farmers of vadugapatti and the adjoining villages for a sum of Rs.92,376 and the seed money for the purchase came from the savings of the Kallar Common Fund (KCF,1936-67),the successor of Kallar Trust Fund (KTF 1919-36) established by the British imperial rulers and the money collected exclusively from Piramalai Kallar as fine and penalty for various kinds of ‘law breaking’ by the Piramalai kallar was thus the source of the KTF money, that turned out to be the seed money for the founding of the College.
The location of the college, Usilampatti, is the political and economic center of kallarnadu. Two other colleges were also started in the same period, one at kamuthi in Ramanathapuram District and the other at meelaneelithanallur in Tirunelveli District, which were founded with the active patronage of P.K.Mookiah Thevar, one of the founder of the college at Usilampatti.
Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar College, affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, was started with the fund of the kallar community and is administrated by the kallar kalvi kazhagam.
