It was established in 1860 in the name of Gujarat Provincial College. In 1993, it was bifurcated leading to the formation of Gujarat Arts and Commerce College. During the Freedom Movement, it remained as one of the prominent centres for student activities. Many great national leaders organized various movements in this college for stirring the patriotism of the students. The college is recognized under section 2 (f) and 12B of the UGC Act 1956 and is entitled to receive grants from Government and its funding agencies including the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and few others. The college was reaccredited by NAAC scoring grade 2.83 on four point scale.
