“An esteemed college with a history of more than 130 years, Fergusson college is a very prominent educational institution in the country. A college that live up to its name, it is not without flaws.”

Fergusson College, Pune, is considered one of the best colleges in the state of Maharashtra and the Country. With a history of more than 138 years, founders who are legendary leaders, and a glorious list of illustrious alums, Fergusson College has quite the brand name. Fergusson College lives up to this brand name for the most part, even though there are a few darts of criticism that can be shot at the college.

As with any college or educational institution in general, FC also has its share of teachers who need to work on their teaching skills, knowledgeability, and attitude toward the students. While most students speak positively about their teachers, there are a few teachers under specific departments that students do not have too many kind words about.

Quality Courses

To speak of the courses offered by Fergusson College, BA and BSc. courses are offered at the undergraduate level. At the postgraduate level, MA and MSc courses under various departments are offered. Students can also opt to pursue a Ph.D. under the various departments. Additionally, B.Voc courses are also offered at the college. Moreover, several varieties of diploma and certificate courses are offered.

To speak of the quality of the courses offered, most of the courses are updated and prepare the students for their careers ahead. It should be mentioned that while FC is affiliated with the SPPU, it is an autonomous institution, so the faculty structures the syllabuses under the various departments.

Is FC Affordable?

The courses offered at FC are very affordable. The fees for most of the courses from UG to PG are lower than the average fees charged for similar courses by other autonomous colleges. Moreover, for students coming from financially challenged backgrounds, the college offers a wide range of scholarships that they can apply for depending on their eligibility.

Knowledgeable and Supportive Faculties

As with any educational institution, the faculty is one of the integral pillars of Fergusson College. In general, most of the students speak of their teachers highly as knowledgeable, insightful, supportive, and friendly. Many of the faculty members at FC are involved in creating the textbooks for the Maharashtra State Board, and that speaks of their competence and expertise.

However, some students seem to be disappointed with the faculty members of some departments, mainly the science departments. Compared to the teachers in the arts departments, the students say they lack the knowledge and the teaching skills.

Average Placement Record

Fergusson’s has a dedicated placement cell that works towards inviting companies for placements and preparing students for the placement drives. The placement record at Fergusson College can be described as below average. As per the placement statistics from the previous year, only 12% of the students from the UG and PG courses got placed. The average package that was offered was INR 4.5 lakh.

It should be noted that the placement record for UG and PG courses in science and arts cannot be compared to that of professional courses. That said, given the placement record at the institute, it needs to work better in securing more placements.

Spacious and Beautiful Campus

The Fergusson College campus is spread over a large area and houses both the junior college for classes 11 and 12 students as well as the degree college. The campus is beautiful and verdant, encompassing many Gothic-style buildings from the British era. The campus also has several modern buildings that have been built over the years.

The campus has ample space to accommodate the students’ academic needs as well as for extracurricular activities. The campus infrastructure is carefully maintained to provide the best academic environment. The classrooms, although some of them are in older buildings, are equipped with modern technology to facilitate teaching and learning.

The library at the college is well stocked with all the necessary books, journals, etc. The library building itself is quite beautiful with its archaic look. The sports facilities, playgrounds, courts for basketball, tennis, and badminton, a gym, etc, are available within the campus.

Hostel Facilities

The Fergusson College provides student accommodation for both boys and girls within the campus through its six hostels. The hostels are well-furnished and serve all the needs of the residents. The hostel fees are also quite affordable.

As for some of the drawbacks of the hostels, a shortage of water tends to happen during the summer months. Moreover, the rules inside the hostels are pretty strict. Especially for the girls, the curfew at the hostels starts at 8 PM.

The students are also served food through the hostel mess. The quality and taste of the food at the mess is average, although most students get used to it. There are also three canteens inside the campus where students can find food and also socialise.

The campus is safe and secure for the students, as CCTV surveillance and guards have been placed. Furthermore, there are several PGs and hostels near the FC campus that provide alternative options for students. 

Awesome Student Life

The student life at Fergusson College is fantastic. The students have a great time outside of the academic responsibilities, as several extracurricular activities take place at the college. There are many clubs in the college that students can join. The student crowd is exciting and diverse, and the fests are celebrated with much zeal.

The month of December is the month of fests in the college. Many departmental fests and college-level places in the college. Students also participate in various state-level and national-level competitions.

The diversity in the student community at the college is very. Being a very famous college, many students from across the country attend the college. Moreover, the college collaborates with many foreign universities, and there are a significant number of international students as well.

There is no dress code for the students at Fergusson. The students are free to wear anything comfortable to them. As for the attendance requirements, students are expected to adhere to the 75% minimum requirement. The rules, however, do not seem to be enforced very strictly.

The Final verdict

Overall, Fergusson College is indeed an excellent institution with its own imperfections. Listed below are the pros and cons of this college:
