DSPMU is on the verge of celebrating its 100th anniversary. Being one of the oldest colleges in Ranchi, the hopes for the students to deliver the desired educational paradigm are high. It is safe to say that Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University has been providing a balanced academic life to its pupils. Over the past century, it has built robust infrastructure, employed skilled faculties, and introduced newer courses.

Despite such practical efforts, the administration has overlooked one of the most essential aspects, which is placements. While reading the students' organic reviews on various online platforms, one learns about the harsh reality of the placement scenario. Not only a handful of companies visit the campus for recruitment, but many departments are not included in the placements.

Further delving into the students' reactions and dismay will reveal that they do not receive any support from the university for bagging internships. Being a central event in the academic life of the students, the university administration should invest and focus on the recruitment process.

Commendable Academics

Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, certificate, vocational and research courses. These degrees or courses are offered in various fields such as arts, commerce, technology, science, law, and many more. Among all the courses, MBA, BBA, and BCA are a few of the popular courses.

The course curriculum is designed as per the standard norm and is kept updated. For this, the knowledge that is transferred is of top quality. Semester exams are held in a timely manner. The university exams are relatively straightforward. Hence, the pass percentage of the students is significant. From the online reviews of the students, it is evident that many times, classes are not held timely. This can hamper the students' preparation for the year's exams.

Being a government college, the course fees are available at a nominal rate. Some of the fees can be as affordable as INR 2,835 per year. The course fees usually range between INR 2,835 - 1,50,000. For this reason alone, students from various backgrounds can be admitted to the university.

Attendance Policy

For all departments, DSPMU has set an attendance policy which must be maintained by the students. Failing attendance criteria may attract strict disciplinary actions. Maintaining attendance benefits the students. Such a criterion is implemented to keep the students in touch and abreast with their chosen subjects. In return, students are able to perform well in their semester exams.

Skilled Faculties

DSPU employs highly qualified faculty members for all of its streams. They possess the required experience and deploy effective teaching methods to retain the attention span of the students.

Being skilled at their profession, the faculty members have been fruitful in delivering the best of knowledge. They are warm and helpful in their approach and address the students’s queries first and foremost.

Sturdy Infrastructure

Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University has recently built a new infrastructure to cater to the increasing needs of the students. Laboratory facilities are built department-wise so that there is no clash of time or the students have to struggle for equipment. The campus also has computer laboratories with WiFi connections. However, students have raised concerns over the speed of the internet connectivity on campus. Similarly, a handful of students have been found dissatisfied on various online search portals for the failure of lab equipment.

The library is well stocked with books, magazines, journals, periodicals, and more. Earlier, the campus did not have any mess or canteen facilities. It was built recently, which has significantly come to the aid of the students. The meals are available at a nominal rate and serve hygienic food. Students have expressed their satisfaction regarding lab equipment and other campus facilities. They are well-maintained by the administration.

The campus premises are kept clean. The premises also have security surveillance, thereby ensuring that it is safe and secure for everyone. The campus has a lot many number of playgrounds that consist of many arrangements for sports like cricket, football, basketball, etc.

In spite of all of these, there is still room for improvement in terms of infrastructure. Many modern technologies can be installed newly. Outdated lab facilities can also be changed. 

Comfortable Hostel Facilities

DSPMU hostels are spread across a vast area. Although the hostel seats are limited compared to the number of students, All the rooms are available on a sharing basis. The rooms are moderately spacious and come furnished with daily necessities and amenities. There is a dedicated mess facility that the students can enjoy.

The mess provides timely and hygienic meals at reasonable prices. If the students want to opt for accommodation outside, then they can do so as well. There are lot many paying guest options available to the students at reasonable prices.

Poor Placement Record

In spite of repeated concerns being flagged by the students, the administration does not seem to have taken the placements seriously. Irrespective of the branches, year after year, the recruitment rate has been dwindling. Apart from the fact that only a handful of companies visit the campus for recruitment, the salary packages offered are also below the industry standards.

Many departments like BA and B.Sc do not conduct placements. There is a lack of training for the interview, resume building or soft skills training. For many students being admitted at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, getting placed is a massive step towards uplifting their social condition. The administration's failure to provide the necessary help shatters many such dreams.

The average salary packages offered range between INR 3,00,000 and 5,00,000 PA. To take part in the recruitment process, students need to score 70% and above in their semester exams. 

Entertaining Campus Life

DSPMU provides a cheerful and entertaining campus life to its students. Students enjoy regular cultural and sports events throughout the year. They are encouraged to participate in various activities and join student-led clubs as per their interests. There is fair diversity among the students coming from different backgrounds from across the state to study.

There are no strict rules or regulations. Neither is there any uniform that the students have to adhere to. However, there is a dress code which the students are expected to follow inside the college premises. As per a few students’ online reactions, the gender ratio is currently deficit, with male to female-student ratio being 4:1.

This needs to be worked upon by the administration. They need to think through various ways and implement various government schemes to encourage the admission of female students. Among the campus crowd, a large number of marginalised students can be seen, which is a good indication of balanced student participation. 

Is DSPMU Worth it?

Overall, DSPMU provides a balance between education and co-curricular activities. It provides lot many options for departments or fields for the students to choose from. Above all, these courses are offered at a very affordable price. But a primary concern among all these is placements. While students are satisfied with the academics, infrastructure and campus life, the placements and internship opportunities pose a great challenge.
