In this greater area from Goalpara in the west, to Guwahati in the East, there was neither a college nor any other institution for higher studies till the establishment of Dakshin Kamrup College in 1961. It was felt that nothing substantial had been done for the progress and development of the women communities in this area so far. So, the educationalists, the local people and the statesmen of Dakshin Kamrup area decided to translate the cause of women education into reality and took the initiative to establish a women college.
This dream found expression publicly in a meeting on 1st April 1988. Sri Jatin Mali, the then State Education Minister of Assam and Dakshin Kamrup Students' Union took the primary initiative to make it a success. The foundation stone of the college building was laid down by Sri Jatin Mali, the then president of College Governing Body on 20th November 1988 and the dream come true when the construction had been completed within a short period of nine months and the college was shifted from its parent body to the present building on 19th August 1989. Till now D. K. Girls' College is the only institution of higher education for girls in the Dakshin Kamrup area.
