Aarupadai Veedu Institute of Technology (AVIT) was established in the year 1998 as an affiliated institution under the University of Madras. It was later affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. Subsequently in 2004, the institution was included in the ambit of Vinayaka Missions University, Salem. AVIT is located on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (Old Mahabalipuram Road) in a sprawling 48.7 acre campus, with a built-up area of 5.65 lakh sq. ft. The institution is committed to impart quality education to the students from different socio-economic backgrounds. The institution offers under-graduate programmes in 14 different disciplines and five Post Graduate programmes including Master of Computer Applications and Master of Business Administration. The institution also offers part–time programmes in five undergraduate streams and five Post Graduate streams. The campus is provided with broadband Wi-Fi connectivity enabling the students to access the internet 24 X 7.
AVIT is an ISO 9001:2008 certified institution and the major programs offered are accredited by the NBA - AICTE. The institution has an adequate number of classrooms and excellent infrastructure for labs with state-of-the-art- equipment. There is a central computing facility in addition to the computer facilities attached to every department. The college has a well-stocked library with adequate textbooks, reference books and national and international journals. The management believes in the overall development of the students and therefore motivates them in a number of co–curricular and extracurricular activities. The institution encourages participation and membership in professional societies for both students and the staff. The professional society chapters in the college are the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), IEEE – Communication Society, IEEE - Computer Society, IEEE - Power and Energy Society, Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Indian Institute of Production Engineers (IIPE), IEEE – Women In Engineering Society (IEEE – WIE), Broadcasting Engineers Society of India (BES) and Madras Metallurgical Society (MMS).
