Updated on - Jul 23rd, 2020 | 12:57 PM by Sushant

The Central Board of Secondary Education, more commonly known as CBSE, is one of the most popular educational boards within the country. CBSE is controlled and managed by the Union Government of India. The board was established in 1962 with its headquarters currently situated in the country's capital, New Delhi. As of 2019, there are about 20,299 schools within the country that are affiliated to CBSE, and around 220 schools located in other countries are also currently affiliated to the board. The schools that are affiliated to the CBSE consists of government schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, private schools as well as Tibetan schools.

All CBSE schools across the country and abroad only have two mediums of instruction - English and Hindi. Two major examinations are conducted by the CBSE board at the school level every year, class 10 and class 12 examinations. It is mandatory for all the schools that are affiliated to the board to follow the curriculum and textbooks that are prescribed by NCERT. As some of the major entrance examinations for admission into colleges and universities in India are based upon the comprehensive syllabus set by the board, CBSE has become a widely preferred educational board in India.

CBSE Promotion Criteria

A student of class 10th and 12th is required to receive a minimum of 33% of makes in every subject in order to be declared pass in the overall result. If a student has failed to receive passing marks in up to two subjects, the student is offered another opportunity to retake the exam called compartment exam that is conducted a few months after the results for the main board examinations have been announced. However, if the student has failed to clear the examination in three or more subjects, he/she will not be allowed to appear for the compartment exams and instead will be required to retake the board examinations the following year.
