The National Testing Agency (NTA) has set the CMAT Tie Breaking Policy in cases where two, or more than two candidates obtain the same marks or score in the examination. In such cases, the candidates are given the same rank and are enlisted based on their date of birth. That is, the older candidate gets the prior rank. It is important for NTA to follow the CMAT tie breaking scheme to prepare the final merit list.
The CMAT 2025 Exam has concluded successfully (Jan 25, 2025, in two shifts), and the result is expected to be out in February 2025. After the result is announced, there will be several candidates scoring the same marks, where the CMAT tie-breaking rule comes into role. Further details on the same are shared below.
What Are CMAT Tie-Breaking Rules?
The CMAT tie-breaking policy is followed if more than one candidate scores the same marks in the exam. Understand the criteria here:
- The CMAT rank is prepared based on the total score obtained by the candidate.
- In case, two candidates obtain the same score, they will be awarded the same rank.
- However, the chronology in the merit list will be followed based on the candidate's age, i.e., the older candidate will be placed first.
- The subsequent ranking in the merit list is then extended by the number of additional students with the same rank.
- For example, if two candidates score the 11th rank, the subsequent student will be awarded the 13th rank.

Why Do Tie-Breaking Rules Matter in CMAT?
The CMAT tie breaking rule is mandatory to be followed as it allows the conducting authority to prepare the CMAT 2025 final merit list with ease. It helps determine the final ranking of the candidates, even if multiple candidates have scored the same marks. Since CMAT is a widely attempted management entrance exam, the tie-breaking p[policy of CMAT allows the candidates to get admission into MBA easily. The candidates are thus advised to focus on their preparation strategy and try to score as much as possible to keep themselves away from the tie breaking rule. However, this rule also ensures transparency in the selection process.
Factors That Determine CMAT Tie Resolution
Certain factors determine the CMAT tie-breaking policy, such as:
- Scoring High in Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation- The students with the highest marks in the CMAT QT&DI section get the higher rank.
- Scores of Logical Reasoning- In case the candidates have scored the same in the QTDI section, the marks of the LR section are considered.
- Scores of Language Comprehension- Even if the tie is not resolved, the commission considers the marks of the Language Comprehension section.
- Scores of General Awareness- However, if the tie persists, finally the scores of the GA section are taken into consideration.
- Elder in Age- The conducting authority also proceeds with considering the age of the candidate based on their date of birth. The candidate older in age shall be listed first.
- Alphabetical Order of Names- They may also consider ranking the candidates, in the situation of a tie, based on their names. The candidates will be ranked chronologically in alphabetical order.

What to Do If You’re in a CMAT Tie-Breaking Situation?
If a candidate is in the tie-breaking policy of CMAT, they do not need to panic. Their ranks will be decided by the National Testing Agency based on the factors shared above. The candidates are advised to check their CMAT scorecards carefully to see if there is any issue in the sectional score calculation. In case there is an error, the candidates must reach out to NTA and raise their query.
In addition, to avoid the CMAT tie-breaking situation the candidates are advised to focus on their preparation strategy and score as high as possible. The CMAT score clash is generally not found in the higher ranks. Thus candidates must try and score better in all the sections. A high score in the sections will help candidates get the higher ranks. However, the candidates must focus especially on the Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation section.
CMAT Cutoff and Tie-Breaking: How B-Schools Handle It?
During the CMAT selection process, the top B-schools accepting CMAT scores consider the candidate's percentile. The higher the candidate's percentile, the higher their admission chance. However, in case of tie-breaking, the institutions too follow NTA's tie-breaking policy, which involves considering the candidate's sectional marks. Each CMAT participating college decides their own cutoff marks which the candidates must meet.
Candidates who took the CMAT Exam 2025 are now awaiting their results. It is expected to be out in February-March 2025. After the result is declared, the NTA will announce the CMAT merit list which may follow the NTA tie-breaking policy as per the requirement.
