In 1878, Pusa was recorded as a government estate with 1350 acres which was acquired by east india company for running stud farm to breed horses for army. Frequent incidents of glander disease made the civil veterinary department to shift the entire stock out of pusa abandoning the estate. The then lord, viceroy and governor general set up a Directorate General of Agriculture to take care of the soil and its productivity by arranging agricultural education. This laid the foundation of Rajendra Prasad University (RAU) Pusa. Till now, Pusa agriculture is considered as the centre of agricultural revolution of the country.

Dr Rajendra Prasad Agricultural University (RPCAU) was established in 1970 at Pusa in Samastipur district, Bihar. It has become an important landmark in agricultural research and education. It became the country’s first imperial college with various faculties and constituent colleges. The university is famously called as Pusa University. Even though Pusa faced many ups and downs, its contribution in the field of agricultural education and research holds a bright future. Understanding the value of the agricultural research, Govt. of India decided to change the status of Dr Rajendra Agricultural University from the State Agricultural University (SAU) to Central Agricultural University (CAU) by accomplishing a bill passed by the parliament on May 28, 2016 which was enacted as Dr.Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University Act, 2016 effective from October 07, 2016.

• Govt. of Bihar provides stipend of INR 2000 per month with an additional contingency of INR 6000 per year to purchase the study materials to the students admitted in B.Sc. Agriculture and B.F.Sc. (Fisheries).
