Union Public Service Commission commonly abbreviated as UPSC is a constitutional body in charge with powers and functions under the Constitution of India (Article 315 to 323 – part 14). UPSC is consulted for all matters regarding recruitment to civil services and posts. The functions of the Commission under Article 320 of the Constitution are:

  • The commission conducts recruitment examinations for services of the Union.

  • Interviews for direct recruitment.

  • Promotion / deputation / absorption for officers.

  • Framing and amendment of Recruitment Rules for various services and posts under the Government.

  • Disciplinary cases relating to different Civil Services.

  • Advising the Government on any matter referred to the Commission by the President of India.

UPSC IFS 2018 – Indian Forest Service Examination

  • IFS exam is conducted by the UPSC ( Union Public Service Commission ) every year.

  • Candidates who are aspiring for the post of Indian Forest Service officer can take up the exam.

  • An IFS officer's duty includes implementing the government plans and programmes under the scope of National Forest Policy.

  • Their preliminary function is to administrate the forest area they are assigned/posted at.


  • Release date: The detailed Application Form (DAF) of UPSC Indian Forest Service Exam ( IFS ) 2018 has been made available on the official website upsc.gov.in from 4th September 2018.

  • Required for: Candidates qualifying prelims have to fill the DAF to appear for the main exam.

  • Mains exam date: The UPSC Indian Forest Service Main Exam (IFS) will be held on 2nd December 2018.

  • Selected candidates: The number of candidates selected this year for UPSC IFS 2018 Mains exam is 110.

  • Final shortlisting: Candidates are selected based on three exams that are prelims, main and interview. The process of selection goes step by step such as candidates selected for the prelims will write the main exam and the candidates qualifying the main exam will get a call for an interview. Hence, the final selected candidates will be considered for the post of an IFS officer.

The UPSC IFS 2018 Application process started from 7th February 2018. The prelims exam was conducted on 3rd June 2018.
