What is KVPY?

KVPY is an Indian national level scholarship exam conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to students pursuing any basic science degree. It is funded by the Government of India DST or Department of Science and Technology, which is significant for students or candidates aspiring to pursue research careers in Science. Since its launch in 1999, it has offered all deserving candidates scholarships and contingency grants until pre Ph.D. level courses.

KVPY 2021 Exam Date

The KVPY Exams 2021 shall commence from Jul 12, 2021. The interview date and the KVPY Exam 2021 result will be announced after the exam concludes. The following table is updated when the authorities release the official dates for the rest of the events.

KVPY 2021 Notification

The KVPY 2021 notification, however, was released on Jul 12, 2021. The KVPY 2021 notification shall contain all important information such as the exam dates, application end dates, admit card dates, result dates, exam centres, exam timings, vacancies, fee payment details, reservation details, etc. The notification will release on the official website of KVPY.

Candidates can download it in the form of a PDF and keep it for future reference. Candidates must also know that the release of the KVPY 2021 notification is significant as it shall also mark the start date of application or the registration process. The KVPY 2021 notification is very important as it contains all essential details and all examination rules and regulations.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) also provides scholarships via KVPY. The following table explains the amount provided to the candidates for different courses under all the three streams i.e. SA, SX, SB.

KVPY 2021 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates willing to apply for KVPY Exam 2021 to seek a scholarship for pursuing or willing to pursue any basic science degree should belong to any one of the streams described in the table below:

Stream SA

The eligibility criteria for KVPY 2021 SA Stream are as follows

  • Must be studying in class XI in the science stream in the academic year 2021.
  • Must have secured a minimum of 75% in mathematics and science in class X.
  • Must pursue B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat. or Integrated M.Sc./M.S. in the academic session of 2022-23, after securing a minimum aggregate score of 60% in Science subjects in class XII.

Stream SX

The eligibility criteria for KVPY 2021 SX Stream are as follows

  • Must be studying in class XII in the science stream in the academic year 2021, or must be studying in the 2nd year of Cambridge International Examination Board in the academic year 2021.
  • Must have secured a minimum of 75% in mathematics and science in class X.
  • Must pursue B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat. or Integrated M.Sc./M.S. in 2021-22, after securing a minimum aggregate score of 60% in Science subjects in class XII.

Stream SB

The eligibility criteria for KVPY 2021 SB Stream are as follows

    • Must be studying in the first year of UG program in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics like B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat. or Integrated M.Sc./M.S. in the academic session 2021.
    • Must have secured a minimum aggregate score of 60% in Science subjects in class XII.
    • Must have secured a minimum aggregate score of 60% in the first-year final examination before taking up the fellowship (if awarded).
    • For SC/ST/PWD applicants, a relaxation of 10% in the percentage of marks scored will be allowed.
    • Applicable streams at the undergraduate level are – applied Physics, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Botany, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Cell Biology, Chemistry, Ecology, Environmental Science, Physics, Mathematics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Neurosciences, Physiology, Marine Biology, Human Biology, Genetics, Geology, Geophysics, Materials Science and Zoology.
    • Students should note that the fellowship will be discontinued if the above marks/grade is not obtained. The student can receive the KVPY fellowship up to the Pre-PhD level or for 5 years, whichever is earlier.
    • If a KVPY Fellow opts out of the basic science (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math. or Integrated M.Sc./M.S.) stream at any stage, then IISc will forfeit the Fellowship and Contingency Grant forthwith.
    • Students or candidates who belong to the Cambridge International Examination Board must be in their second year. They must be willing to carry out the undergraduate program from any subjects belonging to basic science like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.
    • The candidates or students of the Cambridge International Examination Board must also meet the requirements of securing 75% marks or percentile in their Class 10 Mathematics and Science subjects and must also secure a minimum of 60% aggregate in Class 12 Science and Mathematics. The candidates belonging to SC/ST/PwD are given 10% relaxation for 65% and 50%, respectively.

KVPY 2021 Application Form

KVPY 2021 application form was available from July 12, 2021, to Sept 6, 2021. The candidates should fill in the details very carefully to minimize all possibilities of error. It is advisable to fill the form in advance to avoid a last-minute rush as incomplete forms will not be accepted, and these candidates will not be issued any admit cards.

The application process for KVPY 2021 started on Jul 12, 2021 and the last date to apply is Sep 6, 2021. The candidates can find all the important details related to the same on this page.

How to Register for KVPY 2021?

Here are the steps to be followed while applying for KVPY 2021.

      • Go to the Application Form page on the official website.
      • Register yourself by providing a valid Email Id and mobile number.
      • Then log in by entering the password sent to your email id and entering personal details and academic details.
      • Upload the scanned photograph, signature, medical certificate (if required), and caste certificate (if required).

KVPY Exam 2021 Documents Required

Candidates have to upload the scanned copy of

      • Passport size photograph,
      • Signature,
      • Medical Certificates for PWD candidates, 
      • Caste Certificates for SC and ST candidates.

Steps for Payment of Registration Fee

      • Candidates must pay the Registration Fee of INR 1,000 for General and OBC candidates and INR 500 SC/ST/PWD.
      • Payment can be done only through online mode via Net Banking/ Debit Card/ Credit Card.
      • Once the payment is successful, the confirmation page will appear on the screen. The candidates may note down the transaction details.
      • Once the payment is successful, no refund of the application fee will be done.

IISc will release the admit card 3 weeks before the KVPY 2021 exam which will be held tentatively in the month of July 2021. It is advised to check the official website occasionally.

Steps to Download Admit Card for KVPY 2021

Candidates are recommended to follow the given steps to download KVPY admit card 2021:

      • Go to the official link.
      • Click on the given link.
      • A new page will be displayed on the computer screen.
      • Click on ‘Login’.
      • Now, fill in your “User ID” & “Password”.
      • Then, click on the “Login” button.
      • The admit card will appear on your screen.
      • Check the details properly and download it.
      • Take a print copy of it for further procedure.

In case of any discrepancy in the details on the KVPY admit card, the candidate must immediately contact the admissions office and rectify the error before the exam. The candidates are advised to preserve the admit card till the admission process is over.

KVPY 2021 Syllabus

  • The KVPY 2021 syllabus broadly covers topics from four key subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology.
  • The IISc does not include any syllabus in the notification of KVPY, but it mentions that for Stream SA the level is of XI level and for Stream SX and SB, it is of XII level of mathematics and science.

The KVPY 2021 Syllabus for SA Stream is Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The syllabus for KVPY 2021 SX Stream and SB Stream have the same subjects and topics with a few additional topics in all the subjects. The subject topics for KVPY 2021 SA Stream are given on the table below.

KVPY 2021 Exam Pattern

The KVPY Exam is conducted in CBT, i.e., Computer-based Test mode, for 180 minutes. The candidates will be given four options to every question, out of which one or more answers can be correct (Read the question carefully to understand whether it has a single answer or multiple answers).

KVPY 2021 Marking Scheme

There are two parts in each stream of the KVPY 2021 examination.

      • There are two sections for KVPY 2021 SA Stream, namely Part 1, which will consist of 15 questions in each subject of Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry with 1 mark each. For Part 2, there will be 5 questions with 2 marks each.
      • For the KVPY 2021 SX/SB Stream, there will be two sections. Part 1 will consist of 20 questions of 1 mark for each subject, and Part 2 will consist of 10 questions of 2 marks each.

Note: - There is negative marking for Part 1 and Part 2 in all Streams of KVPY 2021, which is 0.25 marks and 0.5 marks respectively for each incorrect answer. Based on the marks obtained in the KVPY 2021 Aptitude test, the students are called for an Interview. The final admission is based on the KVPY 2021 Aptitude test (75%) and Interview (25%).

KVPY 2021 Result

The KVPY 2021 Results will be declared on the official website based on marks scored. Candidates who have qualified have to attend the interview, which is intimated to candidates through email. Once the interview is done, the final list of students eligible for the scholarship is announced on the official website. The final selection is based 75% on the KVPY aptitude paper and 25% on the interview.

How to Check the KVPY Result?

      • Go to the official website of the KVPY exam.
      • On the website, candidates will be able to find a "Result" tab.
      • Pick the desired stream out of SA, SB, SX.
      • Once the stream is selected, the candidate will be redirected to a new window.
      • A merit list will appear where candidates can find their names and check the result.
      • Candidates should view and download the KVPY Result.
      • It is advisable to take a print of the KVPY Result for future references.

KVPY 2021 Counselling

The KVPY 2021 interview is the last stage or the final round. After the results of aptitude tests are made available, students are called for an interview. The interview call letter can be downloaded using the application credentials. The candidates have to bring Application form, Interview call letter, attested copy of Marks card, Caste certificate, Medical certificate (PWD candidates), Self-Appraisal form, Study certificate form, and Teacher Recommendation Form, in the prescribed formats. The candidates will be qualified for the KVPY 2021 Scholarship Grant based on their performance of the KVPY 2021 Aptitude Test and the KVPY 2021 Interview.

What is the mode of the exam and is it only English medium?

The mode of exam for KVPY is online mode. The exam will be both in English and Hindi for the convinience of the candidates.

What is the time duration of the KVPY exam?

The time duration of the exam is 3 hours or 180 minutes. Candidates will not be allotted extra time.

How many exam centres will be there for KVPY exam?

The KVPY Exam will be held across the nation and there will be more than 80 centres all across India. The exam centres are likely to remain the same as last year, however, it may also change.

Is the syllabus for all three Streams of KVPY exam the same?

The syllabus for all three Streams is almost similar. However, there might be additional topics for SX and SB streams for all the four subjects namely Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Is there negative marking for the KVPY exam?

Yes, there is negative marking. For Part 1 of all Streams (SA/SB/SX) a total of 0.25 shall be deducted for each incorrect answer and for Part 2 of all Streams a total of 0.5 marks will be deducted for any incorrect answer.
