About Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary, Madurai

The Tamilnadu Theological Seminary (TTS) was established in 1969 at Arasaradi, Madurai. TTS was given the mandate by the Churches to train pastors for the Tamil churches, with an emphasis on indigenization and involvement. Over the years, with a praxis-oriented curriculum along with a strong focus on social involvement and a simultaneous thrust on contextual Theology, Tamilnadu Theological Seminary has trained Pastors for Mission. Truly an Ecumenical venture, TTS is jointly supported by the Church of South India, the Arcot Lutheran Church and the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church, whose representatives form part of its Governing Council.

Committed to Christ and based on the Gospel, TTS has structured its training programmes with a focus on three fold formation: Personal Formation, Theological Formation, and Ministerial Formation. The twin approach of Contextual Theology with social concern and involvement has made Tamilnadu Theological Seminary to emerge as a pioneering institution, which has put forth Dalit Theology into the hallowed precincts of the Theological Education in India.

The Bachelor Of Divinity (B.D) and the Master Of Theology (M.Th) courses offer the students not only an in-depth knowledge on the Christian Ministry but also the capability to mould one's theological perspective based on the hands on societal exposure, during the course of the study, by opting for voluntary exposures through its various many social action initiatives.

The ideas of Theology in Action, Theological Education through involvement have been given practical expression since the inception of TTS. Constant relationship with the surrounding churches, Indigenous forms of worship and concrete programmes under Ministry to the Prisoner, Rights of Women and Children, Development of the poor and the downtrodden, in the slums, mainly organising the unorganised, Movement building up of the Dalits, Inter – Faith dialogue are examples of this expression.

Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary popularly known as TTS was established in 1969 in Arasaradi Madurai and aims at bringing justice and equality to the society by its teachings. A unique thing about this institute is that it has a theme that is decided in advance for a particular year, such as the theme for 2011-12 was “New Heaven New Earth – Towards Climate Justice”. In this way, it teaches its students to be more responsible and humble towards its society and, therefore, instills in them a sense of equality and belongingness. It has various programs aimed towards better shaping the personality of its students; Off Campus Program, Internship Program, City Dwelling Students Program, Village Dwelling Program and Mission and Ministry Program.
