Bhadravathi has always been synonymous with industries. Located in Shivamogga district in Karnataka state, the town owes its development as a centre of heavy industries to the foresight and vivid imagination of the great engineer-statesman Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant and the Mysore Paper Mills Ltd - his gifts to the town - have provided employment, succor and a steady means of livelihood to its innumerable and grateful citizens. River Bhadra meanders through this town. Bhadra River Project Dam across river Bhadra in Lakkavalli is located at a distance of 20km from Bhadravati. The whole design of this dam was done by Sir. M. Visvesvaraya, the then chief engineer of the State of Mysore. The famous Lakshmi Narasimha temple built in 13th century by Hoysalas and the Bhadra Wild life sanctuary covering an area of over 492 sq km are other attractions of this town.
To fulfill the growing needs of this town in the field of higher education, the Bhadra college was established in the year 1968-69. The MPM and VISL managements took over the running over the college in 1975. The very next year, the college was shifted to the premises where it is presently functioning. The campus is spread over 5.91 acres and is located in a quiet and idyllic locale. The Bhadra college was rechristed as the Sir M V Arts, Commerce and Science College. In the year 1986-87, the college was bifurcated and the Sir M V Science College was shifted to an alternative campus in Bommanakatte. Both the colleges were taken over by the government of Karnataka on 31.8.1995. Presently, the Sir M V Govt Arts and Commerce College is a Grade-II college functioning under the Department of Collegiate Education, Government of Karnataka and affiliated to Kuvempu University. The college caters to the needs of a diverse group of students hailing from different backgrounds and offers undergraduate courses in the streams of humanities, languages, commerce and management.
