“With reputable academic excellence and decent records, Marwari College Ranchi is one of the top colleges in the state. Yet, the lack of facilities in its infrastructure has been a significant concern among its students.”

Considered one of the best colleges in Ranchi, Marwari College is popular among aspirants for its high affordability, as it is a government college, and the assurance of return on investment. Although it offers a myriad of courses across various disciplines, the college is primarily famous for its Commerce programs.

With its relaxed attendance policy, students preparing for competitive exams have ample amount of time to study for these exams while obtaining a degree. The relaxation in attendance may also have adverse effects on the students as nobody forces them to attend classes, not the teachers or the management. Hence, students are advised to stay on top of their studies by themselves and not rely on others to keep them on track.

While there are primarily good opinions among the students of the college, there are certain areas that are disappointing, such as its smaller infrastructure, lack of good quality professors in specific departments, and bad administration. Apart from these factors, the college is a good option overall.

It is a reputable college known for its strong academic curriculum and experienced faculty members. The college offers several courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels across different disciplines in Commerce, Arts, Science, Humanities, Social Science and Vocational studies. The top courses offered by the college based on their popularity and successful career prospects are as follows:

Evidently, the Commerce, Management and specific branches of Science and Arts courses are widely recognised by the past and present students of the college. These programs are said to provide a strong foundation in the respective fields and focus on practical skills required to excel in the industry. The programs also provide in-depth knowledge and prepare students for higher studies or careers in research and academia.

Besides the regular courses, the college also offers a diploma program in Digital Photography and Film Making, which is also recognised by aspiring students. However, the college is seconded by the other colleges and institutions in the state in terms of offering a demanding curriculum and overall strictness. 

Budget-Friendly Tuition Fees

A significant factor that differentiates Marwari College from other colleges and institutions in Ranchi is its nominal course fees, which makes it affordable for students from a diverse range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Even though the course fees for postgraduate students are slightly higher than that for undergraduate students, the tuition fees are still more reasonable than those of other institutions. 

The average annual fees for undergraduate courses, such as BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA, BBA and B.Des programs, fall between the range of INR 7000 and INR 15,000, based on the course type, duration and requirements for completion. Meanwhile, the annual fees for postgraduate courses, such as MBA, MCA, and M.Sc programs, are INR 22,050, INR 21,750, and INR 18,450, respectively.

In addition to the annual tuition fees, students will also need to pay for other costs, such as hostel fees, examination fees and library fees, which are again very affordable. As it is a state government college, students also have the option of obtaining financial assistance from the college, like scholarships, depending on their merit and economic background.

Attendance Policy

The college mandates students to maintain an attendance record of a minimum of 75% in individual subjects in all semesters. Minimum attendance is required for lectures, tests and practical sessions. In case of falling behind in attendance, students will be deemed ineligible to appear for the end-semester examinations. There are exceptions to this if the absence is due to unforeseen circumstances or on account of students’ participation in educational or college-related activities.

Seasoned & Committed Professors

The faculty members at the college are generally well-qualified, experienced and dedicated to teaching. They are passionate about their subjects and are committed to helping students succeed. The majority of professors have a strong command of their subjects and are able to explain complex concepts clearly and concisely. They are also approachable and willing to help students outside of class.

Nonetheless, the quality of professors varies from department to department, with some branches having a more substantial reputation for excellent professors than others. Most professors have extensive teaching experience and are experts in their fields. They can draw on their real-world experience to make their classes more engaging and relevant to students. 

Yet, some professors fall back on incorporating more variety into their teaching methods to keep students interested. They lack in including more interactive activities, such as case studies and presentations, and using online resources such as discussion boards, quizzes, etc. 

While there are professors at the college who are enthusiastic about their subjects and create a positive learning environment for students, some professors are not that interested in providing more individualised attention to students who are struggling by offering additional tutoring or support sessions.

Also, students can benefit from the professors increasing their exposure to international research and trends in their fields, which would help them keep their teaching up-to-date and relevant to the globalised world.

Generally, the professors are a valuable asset to the college with their dedication and experience. However, with a few minor improvements, the professors can even further enhance the quality of education at the college.

Well-Rounded but Poorly Maintained Infrastructure

The infrastructure at the college is adequate but needs improvement to cater to the updated and relevant needs of the subjects and students. The college has various academic facilities that are well-suited for teaching and learning. Yet, some of these facilities are in need of repair and renovation, and the college could benefit from modernisation and improved maintenance.

The classrooms at the college are spacious and well-equipped with necessary furniture, projectors and teaching aids, and most classrooms are air-conditioned. The college also has well-equipped laboratories for all of its science and engineering programs. 

Most of the laboratories are regularly updated with the latest equipment and technology. However, the college needs to add modern elements to keep up with the latest trends in education by installing smart classrooms and upgrading laboratories.

The college has a central library that houses a collection of more than 2 lakh books and resources, along with access to a variety of electronic resources. Still, it requires to be expanded to include more digital resources, such as e-books and databases.

As the overall college infrastructure is comparatively smaller than the other institutions in the state, the sports facilities available on campus are limited. However, there are sufficient indoor and outdoor sports facilities on campus necessary for the students. Additionally, the canteen at the college provides affordable and hygienic meals and snacks.

Recognising the importance of modern infrastructure in supporting academic excellence, the college is committed to continuously improving. The college is installing smart classrooms and expanding digital resources to access online learning platforms. 

Affordable Housing Facilities

The hostels at the college provide students with affordable and convenient accommodation options. The hostels are located within walking distance of the college campus, making it easy for students to attend classes and participate in extracurricular activities. While there are certain areas of the hostels that require upgradation and improvement, they generally meet the basic needs of students.

The location of the hostels makes it easier for the students to eliminate the need to commute to and from classes. The hostels provide basic amenities such as beds and cupboards, among others. Yet, the hostels need to provide more recreational facilities for students, such as standard rooms and sports areas. However, there are limited accommodations facilities on campus, primarily catering to first-year students.

The hostels require improved maintenance, especially in terms of cleanliness and upkeep of common areas. Additionally, the hostels need modernisation, such as upgrading bathrooms and kitchens. The hostels also need to improve accessibility for students with disabilities by installing ramps and lifts.

The hostels provide timely meals in a decent dining hall. Also, the hostels have security measures in place, such as gates and security guards, to ensure the safety of students. 

The hostel fees at the college are very affordable, making them a viable option for students from all financial backgrounds. The fees for single rooms are slightly higher than the fees for double and triple rooms, but they are still very reasonable. It also depends on the availability of air-conditioned rooms.

The average annual fees for air-conditioned single, double and triple rooms are INR 12,000, INR 10,500 and INR 9,500. For non-AC rooms, it is INR 8,000, INR 6,500 and INR 5,500, respectively,

Pretty Decent Campus Experience

The college offers a decent campus life with a variety of student organisations, clubs and activities. Students can engage in sports, cultural events, social service initiatives and other extracurricular activities to complement their academic pursuits.

Nevertheless, several aspects are lacking in the college experience, such as the lack of international exposure available to students. Expanding international student exchange programs and partnerships are limited, which affects the enrichment of campus life and global perspectives.

Overall, the college provides a lively campus environment with adequate opportunities for students to engage in extracurricular activities and connect with their peers. Yet, it being a smaller college does have its own drawbacks.

Diversity on Campus

As mentioned above, the college has a diverse student body that attracts students from various backgrounds, such as socioeconomic, cultural, and regional backgrounds. There is an almost balanced gender diversity with equal male and female students. Dedicated groups and organisations are present on campus for student welfare and support.

Along with that, the college offers a variety of scholarships to support students from financially disadvantaged families, promoting education for all.

Dress Code

There is a mandatory dress code for all students at the college. Every department has a colour-coded uniform that must be worn at all times on campus. The female students must wear salwar kameez, and boys must wear shirts and formal pants based on the colour of the respective department. In case of a student not wearing the respective uniform, a requisite amount will be yielded from them.

Commendable Placement Opportunities

The college has had a decent placement record, with an increasing rate each year. A significant number of graduates from the college have secured placements in top companies across various industries. The placement cell at the college plays a vital role in preparing students for the competitive job market and connecting them with potential employers. 

According to the past year’s records, the college has an average placement rate of 70 to 80%, consistently exceeding the national average. Some of the factors that have contributed to this rate are the strong industry connections it has, by maintaining strong relationships with leading companies in different sectors, such as IT, Finance, Manufacturing and Consulting.

The placement cell comprises experienced professionals who help students connect with suitable job opportunities. They work closely with students to identify their career goals and find placements that align with their interests and skills. Also, the college has a strong alumni network that provides valuable support and mentorship to current students. 

However, the placement opportunities are not uniformly distributed as students from different courses have a higher chance of attaining good placements than the others. Based on the records, B.Com, BBA, BCA and BA departments have a higher placement rate with an average of 70%. The highest salary package offered to students during placements was INR 10 LPA, with the average salary package INR 4-5 LPA.

Overall Impression of Marwari College Ranchi

In conclusion, Marwari College, Ranchi, stands as a reputable institution offering quality education and a lively campus life. The college’s strength lies in its experienced faculty members, rigorous curriculum, relatively robust research focus in certain areas and diverse student body. However, there are certain drawbacks associated with the college, such as its limitations in the infrastructure facilities, international exposure and other such matters. 

In any case, Marwari College is a good option for students seeking an excellent academic experience along with a dynamic campus life. Even though there are better institutions in the state, the college has managed to obtain a place for itself along with the top colleges/universities.
