The Government of Karnataka established Kannada University, Hampi, in 1991 through the Kannada University Act. The idea for such a university was discussed since the mid-1980s, leading to the formation of a commission headed by Sadashiva Wodeyar. After consulting experts, intellectuals, and community representatives, the commission recommended establishing this university to promote Kannada culture, literature, and academic research.
