IIT Kharagpur is located 120 kilometers (75 mi) west of Kolkata. The campus is located five kilometers away from Kharagpur's railway station. The layout of the present campus and the design of the buildings were carried out by a group of engineers and architects under the guidance of Werner M. Moser, a Swiss architect. The 8.5 square kilometers (2,100 acres) campus is residence to about 22,000 inhabitants. In 2015, IIT Kharagpur had about 605 faculty members, 1,933 employees and approximately 10,010 students living on the campus. The campus has a total of 55 kilometers (34 miles) of roadways. The Institute plans to go Green by 2020.
15 hostels are there. Hostel fee is INR 1000/month. PG options available at INR 5000/month. Food is very poor. Per meal costs around 50 rupees. Infrastructure is good.
Around 20+ hostels, with good cleanliness, good internet connection, but no coolers/AC allowed. Hostel fees is around 15k per semester including mess fees. Food quality okay, varies from hostel to hostel. No student allowed to live outside campus. Quality of classrooms and labs is also good and developments are also being made.

Library: The library in IIT Kharagpur is one of the largest & finest in Asia. There are over 3.5 lakhs of documents and subscriptions to about 100+ journals available at IIT Kharagpur. Access to about 26000 online full-text journals and about 135000+ e-books are given to students and staff members.
