Entering its 8th year of establishment, IIIT Pune has made some eye-catching progress in recent years. Originally established to meet the IT (Information Technology) sector demand, the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Pune, stands true to its vision. Students have been delighted with its placement record and overall quality of education.

Being a Computer Science and Engineering-focused institution, the institute has a supercharged coding culture. The admission to IIIT Pune is strictly based on the marks received in the JEE Mains marks. Hence, there is a palpable competition among the students. Despite such a situation, there is an excellent bond between peer-to-peer and senior and junior students. 

The major disadvantage of choosing to study at the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Pune, is the fact that it still does not have its own campus. It currently operates out of a rented campus. As a result, there are frequent issues of equipment breakdown and maintenance. While a newer campus has been under construction, there is significant time to move into it. By then, management should take the necessary steps to address such issues.

Top-Notch Education

IIIT Pune provides exceptional academics to its students. Since only a few courses are offered in limited fields, the management can focus on them more efficiently. By doing so, it has emerged as one of the most sought-after places for Computer Science and related fields of study. The institute offers Bachelor of Technology, Master of Technology and Ph.D. programs. The B.Tech and M.Tech are offered in Computer Science, Engineering, Electronics, and Communication Engineering with various specialisations. 

The course curriculum is vast and follows the guidelines of UGC and other governing bodies. The syllabus is regularly revised and updated with newer topics. Moreover, various additional resources are provided to the students to gain knowledge that would benefit them. 

As mentioned above, the admission process is based on the marks obtained in the JEE exam. Because of the institution’s limited seat offerings, students must score significantly higher cut-off to get admission. In addition to this, the semester exams are pretty tricky, too. Although the pass percentage is relatively high. Which also shows the dedication and competition among the students.

The entire coursework revolves around producing competent future engineers and providing them with the best education possible. The institute has developed various research centres to encourage students to participate in research activities, such as the Centre for Robotics and Security in the Internet of Things (IoT) Space, VLSI and Nanotechnology, and many more. 

Expensive Course Fees

Despite being a government-sided institution, IIIT Pune charges high fees from the students. It is much higher than many of its counterparts. For instance, to pursue B.Tech, students must pay INR 7,20,000 for 4 years, while M.Tech, the fee is INR 2,40,000 for two years. For Ph.D., they have to pay INR 1,30,000. Such expensive fees become impossible to afford for many of the students.

Although education loans are available, they still become challenging to pay back. To counter this, several scholarships are granted by the institution based on the student’s socio-economic status.

Supportive and Experienced Faculties

IIIT Pune employs experienced faculty members with a great base of knowledge. Hence, teaching becomes much more interesting as the faculty members incorporate industry insights into their teaching process. They are also helpful towards resolving the student’s doubts and helping them achieve their academic goals. 

The professors, from time to time, employ unique teaching skills that foster interaction among the students. They also use various real examples to give the students a better understanding and perspective. As much as the focus is on theory, the same id is also given to the practical part. Students need to equally focus on both to be good engineers. Most faculty members also hold high qualifications, and some are actively involved in research and publishing their findings.

However, for a few faculties, students have expressed dissatisfaction on various online platforms. Some of the professors are inexperienced and lack knowledge. Hence, they cannot teach the students properly, and many doubts still need to be solved. However, the percentage of such faculties is minor. 

Decent Infrastructure

IIIT Pune is currently operating from its temporary rented campus. The new campus is under construction. Although no dates have been announced when the new campus will be operational, the rented campus offers good facilities. The classrooms are spacious and equipped with projectors, smart boards, etc. The classrooms seat the students comfortably. Each department has its own laboratory facility equipped with various devices and instruments. The lab facilities are well-maintained.

The institute’s library has a collection of niche books. It also holds departmental textbooks, research papers and publications, journals, periodicals, and many more relevant resources. 

There are minimal sports facilities at IIIT Pune. Since it is a temporary campus, developments have yet to be underway to expand sports facilities. Hence, students often complain about this on various occasions in online forums. There is a sturdy security system present on campus, which makes everyone safe and secure. Additionally, there is a canteen currently on campus serving food and beverages. Although, the quality of the same could be better.

Despite having many required facilities, students have to face frequent breakdowns of all the facilities. Even though the malfunctioning is addressed immediately, it becomes an annoying experience once they encounter it regularly. The only probable solution is shifting to the new and upcoming campus.

Agreeable Hostels

IIIT Pune offers hostel facilities to boys and girls. The rooms are available on a shared basis and contain basic amenities required for daily life. These include bed, chair, wardrobe, table, etc. The hostel premises and rooms are kept clean, hygienic, and regularly cleaned. Students can also opt to stay outside at various paying guest options available at reasonable prices. 

The internet connectivity is good inside the hostel building. The buildings have a 24x7 electricity facility and hot water, making the students comfortable. There is a dedicated mess facility. Although the food quality has often been criticised by the students. The students and staff are safe inside the hostel, which has a good security system. 

Creditable Placement Record

IIIT Pune offers hostel facilities to boys and girls. The rooms are available on a shared basis and contain basic amenities required for daily life. These include bed, chair, wardrobe, table, etc. The hostel premises and rooms are kept clean, hygienic, and regularly cleaned. Students can also opt to stay outside at various paying guest options available at reasonable prices.

Energetic Campus Life

Even if few cultural festivals are celebrated at IIIT Pune, other tech events are celebrated throughout the year. Since it is a technology college, various hackathons and other related events are organised. It gives students an opportunity to explore their craft, network with fellow students, and connect with other techno-nerds. There are various clubs that the students can join based on their interests. These clubs also organise multiple activities to entertain students and explore different interests or hobbies. 

The campus crowd is as diverse as it can get. Since students from different corners of the country get enrolled, there is sane diversity in terms of social, cultural and economic backgrounds. This further enriches the campus experience. However, the male-to-female ratio of students might not be as balanced as that of other institutions of the same calibre.

Rules and Dress Code

Apart from a strict attendance policy, there are no stringent rules and regulations. Students must maintain a 75% attendance record; failing to keep it might result in disciplinary actions. There is no dress code or uniform system imposed on the students. Overall, the rules and regulations are lenient, except for some.

Is IIIT Pune Worth it?

If one aims to succeed in computer science and engineering and its related fields, then IIIT Pune offers one of the best education in the country. With research and tech-oriented focus on studies and approaches, the students get various opportunities to explore the field. Moreover, the faculty members are equally dedicated, experienced, and supportive of the students, which makes a huge difference in developing the students' skills and cultivating an environment of curiosity. 

Moreover, the facilities are modern, and various tech-related events are organised to keep the students' interest high. In addition, the institute offers excellent placement results with an excellent average package and top recruiters visiting the campus.

The only stumbling block currently faced by the students is its lack of a permanent campus. Since it operates from a rented campus, many facilities are frequently at fault, which creates hindrances for the students. Furthermore, there are minimal sports opportunities. Hopefully, once the campus shifts to its new permanent location, things will be better. Overall, the institution offers a unique opportunity for students inclined towards Computer Science and Technology.
