“Gondwana University has been instrumental in supporting students coming from socio-economically marginalised backgrounds to fulfil their academic goals. Still, its placement records remind everyone that it has a long way to go to realise its potential fully.”

When the government realised the need for an educational institution in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, the decision to establish a university was made. With that, Gondwana University was established. It's been close to 15 years that it has been offering good education in various courses.

One of the commendable aspects of the university is that it extensively helps students belonging to socially and economically marginalised backgrounds with great support, including various scholarships. 

The current and the past students are satisfied with the university's approach towards providing an all-round education. However, the administrators still need to work on the placement part. Most recently, the placements have taken place only for a few of the departments.

Good Education

Gondwana University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and certificate courses. These are offered in various fields such as Social Work, Education, Law, Management, Library Science, Literature, and many more. The popular courses from these are the MBA, BA, B.Sc, M.Sc. The curriculum is well-structured and includes the current topics and subjects.

While there is a focus on the theoretical part, there is a lack thereof for the practical aspect. Few students have raised concerns on various social forums about their lack of confidence in carrying out practicals of a subject. 

The admission process is uncomplicated. For the majority of the courses, students do not need to appear for any entrance examination. Their marks in the final course of the school leave examination form the basis for admission. 

Supportive Faculties

The faculties at Gondwana University are very supportive towards their students. They are warm and friendly in their approach and help the students achieve their academic goals. They proactively resolve the student's academic problems as well.

Inexpensive Fee Structure 

Gondwana University is a government-aided public university. Hence, it comes as no surprise that the fees for the courses are very affordable. For instance, the yearly fee for a BA is INR 10,920, while for a B.Sc, it is INR 11,959. The fees for an MBA are slightly higher at INR 30,300 yearly. Apart from the fees being lower, to help the students further, various scholarships are provided based on the social and economic conditions of the students. Thereby further easing the burden of the fees.

Decent Infrastructure

Gondwana University's infrastructure, even though it cannot be said to be state-of-the-art, has built many modern infrastructure. The classrooms comfortably seat a large number of students. The classrooms are well-ventilated as well. The laboratories are equipped with a good number of required equipment, which are also well maintained. The students do not have to struggle for the same. The university library is well stocked with a good collection of books, periodicals, journals, research papers, etc.

Furthermore, there are ample sports facilities for the students to engage in physical activities. The canteen at the university provides good quality food with a variety of options. In addition to all these facilities, there are other facilities, such as a medical centre, auditorium, etc. Moreover, the campus has a good security system that makes it safe and sound.

Agreeable Hostel Facilities

Gondwana University has hostel facilities for its students on a sharing basis. The hostel rooms are furnished and provide the necessary facilities for the students to conduct their activities hassle-free. 

Poor Placements 

Gondwana University's hostel facilities raise a lot of concern among its students. Except for the MBA course, the placements in other departments are not up to the mark. Many departments do not even have the opportunity to recruit. For many students, getting placed is a significant aspect of their life. Not getting proper opportunities for the same causes a lot of distress among the students.

The university management conducts a few placement training programs to polish the skills of the students and increase their chances of employment. As mentioned above, the MBA placements attract a few good companies who recruit the majority of the students from the course. They also offer good compensation to them as well. It is crucial that the university management focuses on the recruitment process and sets goals to improve the conditions.

Jovial Campus Life

Students at Gondwana University enjoy both their academic and campus life. There are cultural as well as extracurricular activities that are celebrated on campus to keep the students engaged. The students are encouraged to participate in the extracurricular activities. The university follows a strict rule when it comes to anti-ragging policies. Any student found violating the rules and regulations is subjected to disciplinary action. 

Students from various walks of life can be seen. There is no strict dress code or uniform that the students need to adhere to. However, students must adhere to the compulsory 75% attendance criteria.

Is Gondwana University Worth it?

For students who have monetary constraints, Gondwana University provides good education at affordable costs. They get to have supportive professors who are dedicated and possess good knowledge of their subjects. Although, the same cannot be said for the placements. The university has only been able to attract a few of the companies for a handful of departments. The salary offered is also average or below average in most cases. In such scenarios, students should weigh their goals and make the decision ahead to choose the courses for their career.
