DHSGSU is the oldest university in the state of Madhya Pradesh and the 18th university established in the country. Being of such importance, not unexpectedly, draws the attraction of a more significant number of students who want to be part of the prestigious university. This is also because, for such a long time in the education system, Dr Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya Sagar has mastered the courses for many of its departments.

Over time, it has built an impressive list of alumni, further inspiring the present and future students to walk in their path. Most of the aspects of DHSGSU are appreciable. However, in many of these aspects, certain loopholes need to be addressed. Students have been vocal about issues that need improvements, such as the quality of teaching, placement packages, rules in the library, and many more. 

While such problems mentioned above are faced by many universities, they must be resolved at the earliest. However, that being said, the university's overall approach is still essentially notable, providing an all-around experience to the students, forming the crux of the university.

Appreciable Academics

DHSGSU follows an updated course structure for all of its courses. The curriculum is structured per the guidelines of the University Grants Commission and includes the current topics that will help the students gain substantial knowledge about the present-day industries. The courses are regularly revised and updated with newer topics and subjects that would add value to the students and bring them closer to industry-ready.

Moreover, outdated content is removed from the courses to keep the relevance of the subjects intact. Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya Sagar offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees. These degrees are offered in many departments, such as Economics, Education, Computer Sciences, Biological Science, Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Philosophy, Physical Education, and many more.

Among these, the popular courses are B.Com, BBA, B.Sc, B.Ed, and B.A. LL.B. (Hons.). A unique offering of the university is its dual degree program, from which students can choose. Very few universities in the country offer such programs.

Admission to DHSGSU is based on the marks obtained in the entrance examination and the required cut-off percentage in their last academic qualifying examination. Combining the entrance exam marks and the school/ college qualifying exam marks, the university management compiles the list of students selected for further rounds of selection or counselling. The semester exams are comparatively difficult. Students must study rigorously to pass the exam and secure good marks. 

Affordable Course Fees

Dr Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya Sagar has set inexpensive course fees to facilitate students from various backgrounds to get admission to the university. Being a public university also helps by having considerably lower costs than many private universities of such calibre. For instance, to pursue a BA.LLB students must spend approximately INR 90,000 to INR 2,00,000 while pursuing a B.A.B.Ed, which requires just INR 7,200.

Similarly, for completing B.Sc, BA, and LLB, the cost will be around INR 5,400, while for MCA, ME, and LLM, the course cost is around INR 4,800. Furthermore, the university also offers various scholarships to its students based on merit and socioeconomic status. This further lowers the cost of courses and helps the students financially.

Experienced Faculties

DHSGSU employs experienced faculty members who know their subjects and the industry. Many faculty members have previously taught at prestigious institutes like TISS, Delhi University, etc. The faculty members support the students and help them in every way possible. They also clear the doubts of the students whenever they arise.

The professors employ an uncomplicated teaching approach which explains the complex topics in a simple manner. Therefore, it becomes easier for the students to understand. The faculty also possess high qualifications, and many are actively involved in research. Thus, the industry's current developments naturally percolate in the teaching pedagogy and enhance the lectures.

While most professors are excellent and dedicated to their profession, students have often complained about a few faculties on various online platforms who do not possess significant knowledge. Furthermore, they do not tend to use an exciting approach to teaching in classes, making the lectures monotonous and failing to retain the students' attention. This creates a more significant problem, as students' knowledge of the subject drops significantly along with their curiosity.

Adequate Infrastructure

Dr Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya Sagar provides all the necessary facilities in good standards to the students. Starting from classrooms, they are spacious enough and comfortably seat many students. The classrooms are equipped with innovative classes, boards, projectors, etc., to make it as interactive and exciting as possible. The university hosts an impressive central library of over 1.3 lakh books. In addition to this, it also comprises periodicals, journals, research papers, etc.

While the library provides ample opportunities to increase one's breadth of knowledge, its accessibility is time-bound to the students. The students can only access the libraries from Monday to Friday from 09:30 AM to 09:00 PM and on weekends from 10:30 AM to 06:00 PM. Thus, it becomes a hassle for students who prefer studying late at night. 

The sports complex at DHSGSU is built comprehensively. It comprises many sports fields, including Cricket, Yoga, Aerobics, Handball, Cross Country, and many more. The sports facilities are well-maintained, and students are encouraged to participate. Furthermore, the campus also provides many other facilities that help the students, staff, and faculty members. Some of these are guest houses, mental and physical health centres, banks, post offices, botanical gardens, Kendriya Vidyalaya, etc.

The campus also has Indian Coffee House, a popular cafe and restaurant chain in the country, providing a delicious variety of reasonably priced foods. The campus also has residential provisions for the staff and faculty members. While the facilities available in the university are praiseworthy, students have often raised concerns over campus security.

No security guard is on the campus's main gate, nor are any CCTV cameras operating. As a result, anyone can walk inside the campus without any checking or hassle. This compromises the security of the students and everyone on campus.

Well-Maintained Hostels

DHSGSU provides hostel accommodation for boys and girls. There are 4 boys and 4 girls hostels located inside the campus that the students can choose from. Each hostel has varying capacity to accommodate students. The rooms are available on a shared basis. Amenities such as recreation rooms, medical facilities, cots, chairs, tables, wardrobes, vending machines, well-maintained bathrooms, internet facilities, etc., are available in the hostels.

There is also a dedicated mess facility available for the hostellers. The food is reasonably good in quality and hygienic. Various events and activities are celebrated inside the hostel to keep the students entertained. The hostel charges are nominal, so more students can afford them. The hostel premises also have 24-hour security, ensuring the safety of the students. Students can also opt to stay outside in the city. Various reasonably priced paying guest options are available to choose from as per the student’s liking.

Average Placement Record

DHSGSU holds a mixed placement rate; in some years, the placement rate can go up to more than 85%; in some, it comes down to 60%. Students have to obtain a certain percentage of marks in their final year to be eligible to sit for the placements. Only some top recruiters visit the campus for recruitment purposes. The placement rate and help also vary from department to department. 

The placement cell looks after grooming the students with the necessary skills to make them better candidates to crack the recruitment process. The training provided also makes them industry-ready. The average package offered stands between INR 3 to 4 LPA. While the highest compensation varies each year. 

Mirthful Campus Life

DHSGSU offers its students a spirited campus life. Various festivals and occasions, such as Founders Day and other cultural events, are celebrated throughout the year. Many college fests of varying capacities are also organised to keep the morale of the students high. In addition to this, students are very much encouraged to take part in extracurricular activities.

Various student-led clubs also organise activities that increase students' interests and participation. It helps the pupils try multiple activities to enhance their learning or soft skills. Additionally, various seminars, talks, and industrial visits are organised to keep the students' curiosity flowing.

While the campus has a better male-to-female ratio of students than many of its counterparts, the same cannot be said about cultural diversity. Students mainly from the state are admitted at Dr Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya Sagar. Hence, it forms a relatively homogenous crowd.

Rules, Regulations, and Dress Code

DHSGSU is not big on rules or regulations. Although students are expected to meet the attendance criteria, failing can lead to strict disciplinary action. The university also prescribes any dress code or uniform, apart from any formal occasion, for which the management informs the students prior.

Is DHSGSU Worth it?

DHSGSU is one of the best options in Madhya Pradesh for students looking for a good education and a wholesome campus life. These are two significant factors that the student looks for while deciding on a university, and Dr Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya Sagar delivers good results in both of these. From its infrastructure to hostels, the majority of the aspects of the university are notable.

Not to mention, it has experienced and helpful faculties, as well as dual degree courses. That being said, few complaints can be heard from the students regarding a handful of faculty members being inexperienced and lapse in security inside the campus. If the management addresses these queries, then DHSGSU can become a top university in the state.
