“Dibrugarh University, located in Assam, is known for its diverse academic programs and a strong emphasis on research. Even though it offers a vibrant learning environment in a picturesque setting, the university lacks in terms of facilities and providing successful career prospects.”

Located in the northeastern part of the country, Dibrugarh University is a public university best known for its Institute of Engineering and Technology. The university is considered one of the best institutions in Assam for its quality of education and opportunities provided in the research fields.

The university is home to various cultures and ethnic groups, with a substantial language diversity. The multicultural crowd at the university helps provide students with exposure to the side of the country that is less explored.

Although the university offers a variety of courses, the overall quality of teaching is mediocre, with the interested students having to learn different concepts by themselves. Over the years, the university has improved its curriculum to ensure students have a solid foundation in their domains. 

However, the main drawback of joining the university is that there are fewer placement opportunities available to the students through the on-campus drives. Though there are graduates from Dibrugarh University who have managed to get jobs at multinational companies, they were not hired for the jobs through the placement drives conducted by the university.

Well-Regarded Courses in Various Fields

Dibrugarh University offers a plethora of courses across various disciplines at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. The university offers around 57 undergraduate, 60 postgraduate, and 15 doctoral programs in Arts, Humanities, Science, Law, Medicine, Management, Engineering, and Technology. Being one of the oldest universities in Northeast India, the courses available at the university have a minimum standard in terms of academic excellence and curriculum.  

Among all the courses, the most recommended programs are Petroleum Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. Besides, the university is an excellent option for those students who intend to pursue doctoral programs as it offers a variety of specializations in different fields.

As for the attendance policy, the students must have a minimum attendance of 80% per semester. Without which, they will not be allowed to appear for the end semester examination. Students who happened to be on leave due to valid reasons, with a minimum of 70% attendance will be permitted to write the exams, provided they submit the required supporting documents.

The tuition fees for each course varies according to the number of years and specialization. The average fee for MBA and M.Tech programs is INR 1,00,000 and INR 90,000, respectively. Whereas, bachelor’s programs, the tuition fees range from INR 11,000 to INR 60,000. The university also provides scholarships to assist students get proper education based on their merit and economic conditions. Overall the tuition fees are not very expensive and can be afforded by a large number of students. 

Qualified and Helpful Professors

The university has adequate faculty members for each department who are well-educated and qualified. These are primarily assistant professors dedicated to providing the required knowledge in their respective fields with limited resources. The professors for specific areas, especially for the Management and Engineering programs, are highly qualified and reputed with enough subject experience. 

The professors are also known to be helpful to those students who are interested in researching topics outside the syllabus. The primary medium of instruction in the university is English. However, as most students are natives, the teachers also switch to Assamese.

Even though the overall quality of the teachers at the university is high, there are professors in specific departments whose teaching is subpar compared to the other private universities in the country.

Mediocre Facilities

Although the university campus is spread across a vast area of land, the infrastructure is not as developed with the lack of modern facilities. One of the drawbacks of the university is its infrastructure without necessary maintenance and upgrades implemented over the years. The management has tried to make the necessary changes, but some areas require further modernization and improvement. The lack of proper infrastructure has been a concern for past students. 

The university is said to have inadequate classrooms to accommodate the entire population for specific courses, with audio-visual equipment yet to be installed. The university's laboratories also have missing equipment and instruments, which hinder the practical learning experience of the students. 

There is a central library with specific corners for each department, which has extensive collections of books and other materials required to enhance the academic experience of the students. Both printed and electronic materials are available in the library. The students have ample seating areas to read and learn for their courses. The research students have sufficient reference books and access to different databases to assist them in their research.

The university campus also has two canteens where different food and beverages are served in a clean and well-kept environment. Students and professors are given enough seating arrangements to hang out and relax after a tiring day. The canteens are accessible for the students till night.

The university also has enough infrastructure for sports and other activities. The campus has two playgrounds, which include cricket, football, and track fields. Apart from outdoor activities, the university also has several facilities for indoor sports, such as Table Tennis and a separate gymnasium hall. Therefore, students interested in sports have all the necessary facilities to engage in different activities. 

Besides the necessary facilities, there are other attractive features included in the university infrastructure, which enhance the overall academic experience of the students. Yet, several spaces on campus require improvement in the laboratories, classrooms, and so on.

Picturesque Hostel Facilities

The university provides housing facilities for male and female students in around 16 hostels located inside the campus. Though there are enough hostels, the intake is minimal, done on a first-come-first-serve basis. As the university is located in a beautiful area of the state, the hostels are equally pretty with the necessary amenities and facilities provided in each hostel. There are specific hostels for international students where the required facilities are provided to make them feel comfortable.

The hostel rooms are spacious, well-furnished, and clean, which makes it at par with the hostels of the other reputed universities. However, students from the past years have said that the inmates of these hostels are rude, and some students may not be comfortable with the activities as the rules are less strict. These kinds of activities are mostly part of the men’s hostels. 

In terms of meals, the students are served timely meals three times a day hygienically in a clean and spacious dining area. The mess fees are included in the hostel fees. The safety of the students is taken care of by the specially appointed wardens and security guards. Students also have the option to stay outside the campus, in PGs and hostels available around the university, with nominal rents. 

Multicultural Campus

Apart from the fact that the university is located in a beautiful, lush green area of the state, the campus is also filled with students from different cultural backgrounds and languages, which provides a particular exposure to the students.

Although the primary language spoken on campus is English, several other languages are also spoken, such as Assamese, Bengali, Mising, Karbi, Garo, etc. As the university is one of the best in Northeastern India, the students from other states in the region are also part of the campus, along with international students.

The university also has several clubs and organizations for students interested in extracurricular activities. Seminars, workshops, and other academic activities are conducted occasionally, which help the students develop their skills and talents. There are sports tournaments and competitions conducted annually where students have the opportunity to showcase their skills.

The diversity of cultures and languages enables students to learn more about India and other countries. The university is located in a rural area, but students have access to different locations and places to explore during their weekends and holidays.

Diversity on Campus

The university crowd is very diverse, with an almost equal number of students from all genders. All students are given equal opportunities regardless of their caste, creed, economic status, or cultural background. The diversity on the campus only acts as a catalyst for the students to learn more about the world around them.

Dress Code

There are no specific uniforms or dress codes for department students except for Management Studies. The students from this department are expected to abide by the strict dress code imposed by the university for specific days. Other than that, the students can wear casual clothes that are modest and decent to maintain the overall decorum of the campus.

Unreliable Placement Records

According to the previous years’ placement records, only very few students were recruited by the top companies in the country. Most career opportunities are offered to students who graduate from the Petroleum Engineering and Mechanical Engineering departments.

The placement cell of the university is inactive, does not provide proper training for the outgoing students, and does not invite potential companies for the placement drives. There have been cases where specific departments did not even have a placement drive due to the student's incompetence. 

Only a handful of students from other departments, like Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering, are selected and recruited by the companies. Most students from the different departments, like Arts and Science, are interested in pursuing higher studies or appearing for the national-level exams. 

Based on the placement records, the highest salary package offered to the students was at INR 14 LPA, and the average package was at INR 5 LPA. The students who graduated from MBA programs also have good prospects, with an average salary package offered at INR 7 LPA. 

Overall Impression of Dibrugarh University

In conclusion, Dibrugarh University is a good choice for those students who wish to lead a career in the research field, as the university offers several opportunities and facilities. The university's location is also enticing for those students who like to travel and explore the country. However, there are certain limitations of studying at the university.
