Army Institute of Law, Mohali was established in the year 1999. Under the aegis of the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES) the college was established by the Indian Army at its interim location at Patiala. The institute has a moderately sized campus in Sector 68, Mohali in the year 2003. the college was inaugurated by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

AIL college is affiliated to the Punjabi University, Patiala and approved by the Bar Council of India. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has Accredited the AIL with grade 'A'.

Army Institute of Law admissions will be done through an entrance test(Online LET). The AIL conducts entrance exam under the aegis of AWES.
