What is National Students' Union of India [NSUI]?

NSUI, the National Students' Union of India, is a political party's student wing, Indian National Congress. The National Students' Union of India came into existence on 9th April 1971. The organization was founded by Indira Gandhi, who was the Prime Minister at that time.

NSUI, the National Students' Union of India, commonly, is a student union that came into existence on 9th April 1971 as a student wing of the Indian National Congress. The national student union of India was formed by the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. Since NSUI's initiation, the union has strived for a more liberal, secular, and democratic country. The headquarters for NSUI is located in the capital of the state, New Delhi.

The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) has over 40 Lakh members and about 15,000 colleges. The president of the National Students' Union of India is Neeraj Kundan. NSUI works towards safeguarding the rights of the students' community and shaping young citizens to be leaders.

The governing committee of NSUI comprises of the following,

1. National Office Bearers (NOB)
2. Central Election Authority
3. Social Media Team

At the base level of the NSUI structure, college beneficiaries are organized based on the organizational institutes that they are a part of. Further, the state or district level office bearers are appointed by the college level bearers. The committees formed at the state, district, and college levels are done through an anonymous selection process. The national-level bearers are elected by a committee of elite people from the state, and the district elected bearers.

Criteria to Become a Member of NSUI

In 2007, Rahul Gandhi made the NSUI more transparent by introducing an open membership process. NSUI categorizes its members as "Primary Members" and "Active Members." Therefore, a person who aspires to be a part of the National Students' Union of India will become a primary member after the union's recruitment process.

An online membership form to apply to become a member of NSUI is available on its official website. Details like name, date of birth, age, gender, address, etc., are required to apply for membership.

However, before applying, the candidate needs to fulfil the criteria to be a member of NSUI.

• The member applying to be an NSUI should not be of more than 27 years.
• The member applying should be a citizen of India.
• The applicant should not be a part of any other political party.
• To be a member, students should not have any record of criminal activity.

The National Students' Union of India has various campaigns that regularly initiate highlighting what we lack as a country. NSUI aims to make the citizens aware of the challenges that might go unnoticed on a regular day.

Behtar Bharat

In this campaign, the members of NSUI work towards building a "Better India" (Behrat Bharat).

Some of the goals of the Behtar Bharat campaign are listed below.

• Equal opportunities for everyone.
• The goal of education is employment.
• Career counselling, so the youth is fully aware of the plethora of options.
• End bias for non-English speaking students.
• Revisit the education system.
• Make education and work more women-friendly.
• Access to quality and affordable higher education.
• To maintain the non-negotiable rights of the students studying in schools and colleges.
• Bring the number of dropouts down.

I am the Change

I am the Change campaign works towards ending child labour and providing them equal opportunities to learn. NSUI's members took this initiative to encourage and make people aware of the difficulties facing the poor face's difficulties regarding education. Anyone can volunteer for the I am the Change campaign on weekends for three months and a change in someone's present and future.

Pehli Peedhi

Pehli Peedhi means the First Generation. The members of NSUI give a platform to share the journey if one believes education is a privilege. Besides, volunteers can also share their thoughts through the Pehli Peedhi platform and motivate others to come forward to take their first step.

Young Women Leadership Program

In the Young Women Leadership Program, the NSUI acknowledges that women are much more than daughters, wives, or mothers. Therefore, NSUI aims at identifying the true potential of young women in the country to shape them as leaders of the future.

The goals for the initiative are,

• Expand women's freedom.
• The campaign aims to articulate women's demands and agenda.

Take the Pledge

Many people do not realize the power and voice they have in the decision making for the nation. Through the Take the Pledge campaign, NSUI tells people to come forward to stand in the acting ruling party. In this campaign, the National Students' Union of India states: "If you do not vote, you lose the right to complain."
