The way of celebrating it varies from place to place. Some people simply play with colours, some drink thandai, organise events and sing Holi songs, locally called Phalguna geet in North India. The real meaning of the Holi festival is energy, positivity and fun.

The commencement of the holi festival can be seen from the morning when kids and adults put on their old clothes and begin playing with colours with their friends, neighbours, and relatives. People have made a ritual of gathering both in the morning as well as on the night of Holi. On this day, children play with water balloons and water guns filled with colours. People apply colours on each other as a symbol of brotherhood and happiness. In some places, especially in North India, there is a ritual of drinking thandai and singing Holi or Phalguna songs. 

On this day, the streets and houses are filled with a mix of different colours as everyone immerses themselves in the festival of prosperity, unity and fun.
