The compartment exam is given when you have failed in a subject. The improvement exam is given when you are unhappy with the marks in a subject, and you want to improve the scores. So, these two aspects are clearly very different. If you want to appear for the improvement exam in only one subject, then you can appear in the same-year compartment exam. If you want to improve your scores in multiple subjects (or all subjects), then you have to reappear in the main exams held in the following year.
