Greater Noida, September 6th, 2023: Bennett University, in honor of India's G-20 presidency under the theme 'One Earth, One Family, One Future,' successfully organized a one-day workshop titled “Challenges Towards Attaining Sustainable Development Goals - An Indian Perspective” today. This remarkable event featured distinguished guests and experts who addressed critical topics related to sustainable development goals (SDGs) and India's role in achieving them.
The workshop was attended by the Guest of Honour Hon’ble Dr. Sasmit Patra, MP (Rajya Sabha) and Leader of BJD Parliamentary Party in the Rajya Sabha, and other distinguished guests, Prof. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Director, Indian Law Institute, New Delhi (Deemed University) and Prof. Simrit Kaur, Principal Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi, Prof. K.K. Aggarwal, Former Chairman, National Board of Accreditation, Delhi, Founding Vice Chancellor, GGSIP University, Delhi.
Hon’ble Dr. Sasmit Patra, MP (Rajya Sabha) and Leader of BJD Parliamentary Party in the Rajya Sabha provided a comprehensive overview of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing the importance of fostering peaceful societies and building effective institutions (SDG 16) and the significance of global partnerships (SDG 17). He highlighted India's commitment to SDG implementation, guided by two distinct models: the Economic Model and the Human Rights Model, which align with the principles of the Indian Constitution, addressing the human rights of marginalized sections and tackling economic challenges.
The panel discussion, “Arohan India: One Health, One Family, One Future,” was graced by eminent panelists, namely Prof. B. K. Thelma, Dept of Genetics, University of Delhi & Fellow, INSA, Dr. Shashi Kumar, ICGEB, New Delhi and Prof. Arun Jagannath, Dept. of Plant Science, University of Delhi. The panel discussion highlighted the importance, relevance, and challenges faced in attaining SDGs, focusing on research, thought leadership, and capacity-building initiatives relating to G20. The panelists spoke about varied topics such as temperature's impact on climate, developing transgenics in mustard plants, genetic variation through ages, and its effects on health.
While addressing the gathering, Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Ajith Abraham said, “As a citizen of India, it’s our prime duty to contribute towards 17 Sustainable Development Goals, identify new avenues for future initiatives to enhance India’s economic growth further while ensuring sustainability and social inclusiveness. As a nation deeply committed to democracy and multilateralism, India's G20 Presidency would be a watershed moment in her history as it seeks to play an important role by finding pragmatic global solutions for the well-being of all and, in doing so, manifest the true spirit of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' or the 'World is One Family.'”
The workshop provided a platform for experts and policymakers to engage in meaningful discussions, exchange ideas, and collaborate on solutions to address global challenges. Its key objective was to emphasize sustainable development as a shared global responsibility, uniting nations and individuals. From developed to developing countries, from high-level policymakers to individuals, the event underscored the need for collective action to address pressing global issues, including climate change and promoting sustainable economic growth.
