How is the JEE Mains Rank Calculated?
The JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). This exam is a gateway for admission into various undergraduate engineering programs at prestigious institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and other government-funded technical institutes.
Every year, lakhs of students appear for this national-level exam, making it difficult to rank the students. However, NTA employs a normalisation process.
The process to calculate JEE mains rank 2025 is listed below for students to have an understanding of how they are ranked; the percentile score is calculated:
1. Calculating the Raw Score: There are three subjects in the JEE Main Paper 1: mathematics, chemistry, and physics. The maximum score for each subject is 100. Hence, the overall maximum mark for Paper 1 is 300.
For each topic, candidates are given raw scores determined by deducting marks for incorrect answers and adding marks for correct answers. The actual amount of marks the candidate received is known as the raw score.
2. Normalisation Process: The NTA uses a normalisation technique to consider the difficulty levels among various sets of question papers. As part of the normalisation procedure, candidate percentile ratings from various sessions and shifts are equated. This guarantees a fair comparison and takes into consideration any variations in difficulty levels.
3. Calculating the Percentile Score: A percentile score indicates what proportion of applicants received a given raw score or less.
Percentile Score is calculated by NTA using the following formula: (Number of candidates with a raw score equal to or less than the candidate / Total number of candidates) x 100. Then, the applicants are ranked using percentile scores. Higher percentile scores attain a higher rank.
4. All India Rank compilation: The All India Rank (AIR) is compiled using the candidate's percentile scores. Admission to different engineering institutes in India is based on the AIR.
