Placements and Internships

4.5

SASTRA is very well known for its 100% placement. There is a training and placement department which trains everyone after 6th semester. It boosts up confidence in every one to get placed in a good company. Many companies visit our University in 7th semester whereas some visit even in 6th semester.

Electrical core companies like TVS, L&T etc visited us in 6th semester. SASTRA has a mutual agreement with TCS. So, TCS visits first in the software companies and takes a whole lot of students with a decent package of 3.26 lakhs per annum. Wipro, Tech mahindra, Infosys, Cognizent, Accenture etc visit after TCS. Companies like Google, Microsoft etc provide a great package of even 18 lakhs per annum, but it's only for specific departments like CSE, ICT, IT and ECE. Musigma also provided 18 lakhs of package for which every department was eligible to apply. Students who have backlogs were also placed in some companies later.

In 8th semester, we are supposed to do a project in a group of 4. SASTRA also provides an opportunity to work in reputed companies as interns. I worked as an intern in Reliance communications but without any stipend. Some companies such as Honeywell, Schneider electric takes interns with a decent stipend.

Once we complete the course in SASTRA, they arrange a convocation in a grand way. This convocation was inaugurated by APJ Abdul Kalam thrice. Many other noble persons were invited for such occasions. Alumni groups were created to be in touch with the fellow students after leaving the university. It's really a great opportunity to make good use of the contacts.

College Infrastructure and Hostel Facilities

4.5

Infrastructure is really good in SASTRA. Each building is dedicated to one department. The new building for research which was inaugurated by APJ Abdul Kalam is the India's best research centre in the universities. The buildings are very well structured into classrooms, laboratories, staff rooms etc. The class rooms are very spacious to accomodate 60 students. The benches are wide enough to sit and even sleep for some students who are bored of the lectures.

Saraswati sadan, It is a building of 3 floors that is dedicated only for the library. It has thousands of books of each category which can be easily found without taking much time to search for a book. The library also has facilities to listen to some audio books and also to watch movies with the best audio and video systems. There is also a facility to borrow books from the library to read later.

The laptops can be registered to University Wi-Fi. I should frankly say that it is little bit slow. Sometimes we can't even access Google or Gmail!!!

There are about 5 hostels for girls and 10 hostels for boys. The hostel premises look really cool. The hostel has all the facilities that one can expect from. Both girls and boys hostels have gym with many equipment, table tennis, carroms, skipping, basketball ground, badminton ground, volleyball ground etc. The hostels are named in a very traditional way like Anasuya, Arundathi, Ahalya etc for the girls hostels. There are sharing rooms and single rooms as well. Students can share room with 10 persons that is very cheap costing around 5000 rupees per annum. The single rooms cost more about 18000 rupees per annum. Students who doesn't like the strict rules of the campus used to stay outside the campus in some PGs or the hostels outside. But these are not very nearer to the campus.

The dining halls in the hostels are best. They are very spacious and can accomodate around 500 students. Both North Indian and south Indian food was available. Food is tasty too.

Entrance Exams and Admissions

My admission into SASTRA University was an unexpected and interesting one. I say this because I was aiming for the IITs. But sadly, I couldn't get into that and then I searched for the good universities which stand in the top rank in India. I get to know about SASTRA then.

The admission procedure was not so complicated. You just need to apply online. After reviewing the applications, SASTRA releases the rank list. When I applied, it was based on either the intermediate score or the AIEEE rank. But now, they have changed it to JEE ranks alone. I saw my name in the top list as I have achieved 97% in my intermediate.

Then comes the counselling. Not all applicants are called the same day. Top rankers are called the first day and then it goes on. I was interested in Electronics and Communication Engineering. But to my surprise, the seats of ECE were all filled first and it happened too soon that I didn't have a choice to choose that branch at all. The topper in the rank list was of 98.1%. All of the ECE and most of Mechanical department seats were filled up for 97.5%. When it came to me, there were only 2 seats left in EEE. So, I thought of opting that branch.

But then, came the real story. I had provided all the documents they needed except TC (Transfer certificate) from my intermediate college. They refused to give me a seat in their university!! I was surprised!! When I requested them, they have asked me to talk to Dean there. I have requested the dean and provided a letter of request stating that I will provide the TC to them within a week. They were willing to give me a temporary admission on this condition. And as I stated, I have submitted the TC in person within a week which made my admission permanent.

Academics and Faculty

4.5

Many students were really afraid of the strict environment that can be seen in the campus. Girls are not allowed to go out. If they have to go out for any reason, they should submit a fax from their parents stating that it's necessary for them to out!! I think it's good in some way for the safety of girls. But many don't agree with this point.

The classes starts at 8.40 sharp in the morning and it continues till 4.50 in the evening. we had 20 minutes break in the morning before lunch by 10 O' clock.

We have 4 subjects in 8th semester which we can complete before if we wish. Those are optional subjects and so we can choose any that we are interested in. These optional subjects can be completed from 4th semester. Those who take these will have extra classes once a week after the college hours i.e. from 5 pm to 6.30 pm. One important point is that at any cost, every girl should be in the hostel premises by 6.30 pm every day.

Every semester, students have an option to choose their faculty and subjects online. I think this is a very good opportunity to study in the class of a good professor. Many assistant professors are well qualified and teach good. The laboratories provide a great chance for the research.

We have three internal exams and one external examination each semester. You have the option to write any two internals. But, if you write all the three internals, they take the two best marks out of three and make it into 50%. The external exam is for 100 marks which they make into 50 and add the internals and external which comes to 100 and declare their sgpa i.e. Semester grade percentage.

They give many assignments to complete about 2 to 3 in a month. But it's not that complicated to complete it.

Fees and Scholarships

4

When I started my degree course in SASTRA, the fees was 35,000 rupees per semester (payable only through Indian overseas bank) excluding the food and lodging. It was costing around 2500 rupees per month for the food which is payable online through only City Union Bank account which was mandatory for every student. Coming to the hostel fees, it was ranging from 5,000 rupees to 18,000 rupees per annum depending on the room you choose. I got to know from my juniors that the fees are gradually increased per semester. It is 60,000 rupees per semester now.

There is a facility to get loans from the bank to pay the fees. Many reputed banks like State bank of India, Indian overseas bank etc. will be having their tents in the university during counselling to help students and their parents.

Yeah, there were many types of scholarships in the university. Students who achieve highest marks in a subject and who stand in the top list in the Cumulative grade percentage receive 5,000 to 10,000 rupees of award as a scholarship. The list is called as Dean's list and it is ranked every semester. Around 200 to 300 students receive it every semester.

Clubs and Associations

4.5

SASTRA has many clubs like arts, music, dance - both traditional and western, literature, dramatics, languages like French; Spanish; Japanese; Telugu; Tamil; English, crafts, musical instruments etc. Students can join any club based on their interest.

Daksh - It is the tech fest of the university. Students from other universities also participate in the fest.It is noted as the best tech fest ever.

Kuruksastra - It is the cultural fest which every student would enjoy. Famous singers visit the university and perform on the stage. It is the best opportunity for the students to showcase their skills.
